ABS light is on and off

Ok, so I got my silders welded on and now the ABS light comes on after a few seconds of driving. When I first start the truck, it's off. I go a little ways and it comes on again. Did my welder buddy hit something under there? Brakes work fine...no difference there and no leaking fluids. I'm thinking something electrical since he used a stick welder...thoughts?

i'm assuming you didn't disconnect your battery when he welded them on. i think you are supposed to but i would take off the battery terminals and leave the battey disconnected for 15 or so minutes. then make sure the terminals are clean and in good condition and reconnect everything.

I did that tonight....we'll see if it helps. I'm wondering now if it has something to do with the LED tail lights I put in...it was around the same time.

A little off topic, but I don't understand how you guys can wheel with ABS. Mine wouldn't let me stop on most steep downhilsl. It almost sent me into a lake and a river on two separate occasions. I pulled my fuse a long time ago so it wouldn't make me crash off road (or especially on road in the snow). And actually, once I almost killed someone because I tried to stop on a patch of pine needles and someone was crossing the street in front of me. I can't believe I'm the only person I know who seems to think Toyota's ABS on the earlier 3rd gens is downright dangerous - even more so than any of the millions of recalls they're doing right now.

Honestly I hadn't even thought of that Brian...makes sense though. ABS definitely has its ups and downs. I've heard from some driving schools where they teach people how to stop their cars faster than ABS can anyway...


I looked at that thread about the LED tail lights...but it didn't give a solution.

i put a kill switch in mine for exactly that reason. my 2000 never had ABS and i did not miss it

Ahh, ok. Good thinking. I would install a switch on mine now too, but I never really noticed it stopping me any faster on dry roads than I could with just my foot anyways so I'll just leave mine alone. It's a good thing to do though because ABS is worthless and dangerous off road.

On snow too, i had to downshift to stop (i normally do) cause i almost slid onto a main road in snow.

Yeah, snow is the worst of all for ABS! I used to have to give myself like a football field's worth of a cushion to not rear end cars in the snow. Where's our recall, huh Toyota?? Our problem is twice as dangerous than a sticky throttle because at least for them, they can always put it in neutral, but you can't make brakes work if they are too busy pulsating.

OK, so somebody remind me to pull the ABS fuse while I'm wheelin' in CO next week! Back to my original problem...it may have disappeared on its own?@! I just drove about half an hour and it never came on...oh well.:infidel:

The ABS light stayed on all day today...I saw something in the other threads about a resistor? Anybody know what size and where?

I had problems with my 97 4runner abs sticking and not releasing. It only happened twice, once when i put the brake pedal to the floor and once going over some speed woop dee doos i did not see until it was too late. Any how the brakes stuck engaugeed, i had to start and tun off the vehicle about 30 times before it fully released the brakes. I pulled the abs fuse! Never have to worry about it again.
