ABS Sensor

Can anyone explain how the Rear ABS sensor works on a 1995 4Runner and what sets it off, I saw a post on another forum stating that chipped gear teeth can set it off. Mine turned on about a month ago and was wondering how I should tackle this problem. The sensor itself seems to be intact completely but I do have a leaking seal in right side of axel and in need of some new bushings in the rear upper control arms.

The rear ABS sensor reads the ring gear serrations.
I think you'd have to trash the R+P pretty bad to have a problem.
The sensor itself could be bad. You can check it by disconnecting it and checking it's resistance with a DMM. It should be 550-700 ohms.
