Ac issues

I have a 1996 4runner 3.4 L engine, with 147,000 miles. I am experiencing some Ac issues. Every time I start the Ac, it cools for the first 10 seconds and then it turns into warmer air. Could this be an expansion valve problem? I live on a small island so diagnostic supplies are limited .

Watch the clutch on the AC compressor to see if it's cycling (engaging/disengaging) too quickly. In 70 degree temps it should stay engaged for 30+ seconds with the proper refrigerant charge. Also feel the AC lines going into the cab. One should be really cold and the other should be less cold but still cold. Usually the problem is low Freon charge which would indicate a leak which would need some special but readily available tools like UV dye or a leak detector and some Hi/low pressure gauges ( almost mandatory for any real diagnosis of AC problems)
