AC retrofit

Who here has updated their air conditioning to Freeze-12 or R134? Did you do it yourself or have a shop do it? What did it take and/or how much did it run you?

is your AC currently working? I had a quote on my 3.0 system to convert it and it was gonna by about $300. thats when my ac worked. Now it does not work and I got a quote to fix it and do the retro and it was $900..

I have used the invir O safe product in my home AC for years and it lowers the electric bill due to airconditioning about 15% and the air at the ducts is much cooler. Also I can legally buy it in bulk and install it myself. The link is for the R12 replacement in your vehicle.

For those who already have the 134a here is an alternitive that is colder then the 134a http://www.es-refrigerants.com/prod...e-super-alternate-ac-recharge-kit/details.asp

This stuff is comaptable with your current system and nothing has to be changed. It works at lower head pressures and that saves gas and saves the system while giving off colder temps.

I converted mine to 134a about two months before my head cracked and it was working really good. Better than expected actually. When I pulled my engine a few days ago, I "accidentally" broke loose one of my A/C lines and it was FULL of refrigerant.

It was very cheap to do the conversion myself but it did take me manufacturing a re-route pipe for the fitting to have enough room to attach. Pretty much, after attaching the 134a schraeder valve fitting onto the original schraeder valve, I didn't have enough room to attach my gauge lines. So I re-routed it.

I can post a pic of the fitting a made a little later if you'd like.

Word on the street is that I shouldn't expect this conversion to last too long due to the difference in pressures of 12 and 134a. But I'm gonna roll with it until it quits.
 
Very cool. Can you install that without pulling vacuum?

While a vacuum is better if the system has been open for a period of time and drawn in moisture you can purge the system and use it that way without a vacuum or if the system already has the R12 and is low you can just add this as it is compatible.

I thought the 134a wouldn't last because the oils were wrong or something and the seals would dry out and crack. But I'm no expert.
