acceleration vibration.

Sorry i know I'm posting a lot but I'm allergic to service depts..

2014 800 miles TE

When using moderate throttle around 2-4k rpm theres a steady vibration on the steering wheel.
It's fairly heavy if you touch the top of the wheel.

Searching says this has been due to worn out tires, brakes or axles. But at 800 miles...

Before i bring it in to have the service dept booger up my truck... Is this normal?

Sounds to me you may have tire imbalance. Even at 800 miles, it may not be uncommon, you may have lost a wheel weight. I'd take it in to make sure it's nothing more than that.

Just sayin'

Thanks. I didn't realize that balance issues might only appear under load, rather than constant.

No need to apologize for frequent posting as this stirs up forum activity, which the owners encourage to attract sponsors.

In your post, you reference the RPM but neglected to mention your speed at the time of the vibration occurrence. Is the vibration from the wheels or the engine... Stifler likely nailed it when honing in on wheel balance, but only if the trouble is when driving(?)...

If it was tire balance it would be both under load AND coasting. Whether in drive or neutral. Mine has a similar problem. My wheel shakes at 55-65 mph. Under that it's fine. Toyota balanced my tires and that didn't help. I had them inspect suspension and steering components. They said all was good. Then I had them adjust the alignment and that helped some. Shake is still there but minor. But also, mine was there all the time not matter what driving condition. Yours sounds similar to what the tacomas get when lifting and having a driveline vibration. Not to scare you,but it is a possibility. With out figuring out where the general location of the vibration is, it's hard to tell. Try jacking up the front of the truck. Grab the top and bottom of the tire and see if there's any play. Could be something as easy as a slightly loose ball joint or uca bolt....sorry not much help for such a long post.

The truck is smooth as glass under light acceleration or coasting. (Like cruise control on the highway)

the vibration begins around 2.5k. I haven't really had the truck over 4krpm yet. It just kinda "turns on" at 2.5k and is present while accelerating.

It's very mild on the sides of the steering wheel, but very apparent if you touch the top (i usually drive from the top of the wheel, one handed.)

It's only felt through the steering wheel, really.

I had a 2013 FJTT, it had 265-75-16 BFG AT's on TRD wheels with the fake beadlock rings and it had the same issue.
Mine was a combination of the wheels and tires that had to be Road Force balanced.
While RF balancing they also found 2 brand new tires to be out of spec while trying to balance and replaced them under warranty. That's why I made the statement that is may not be uncommon.

Thanks guys.

Did some 'diagnostic driving' and took it up to 5k.

I think I slightly misremembered what happens.

2400-2900 rpm vibration, and about 3400 rpm too. It's smoother, but not bad at otehr RPMS (more steering feedback?)

I took it up to 5k, and it was very smooth.

MAybe it's just an aligning of the all the components that makes it vibrate at those RPMs.

I'll get my wheels balanced anyway. I need to bring it in to get the alignment sorted out anyway.

I did notice my engine block looked like this:

Is that normal? rough casting? All my other aluminum blocked cars have very smooth blocks. I didn't notice that before when I was detailing the engine, but sometimes I overlook the obvious

Hi flyboysgt and THEDK,

A member shot me a pm a while back (keeping the member's name anonymous to observe pm confidentiality) with a bad vibration issue, here's the message:

"Thank you for responding.

The issue is a severe vibration coming from underneath/rear end area at roughly 75-80 MPH most steady at 80 MPH. It shakes the seats (passenger seat bouncing back and forth) and I feel it in the pedals, but not the steering wheel. It seemed to have started after I had the driveshaft replaced under TSB. Had these tires road force balanced 5 times now and each time they say they are within spec. Runout is less than 8 on each tire. I'm having the tires replaced with a different brand altogether. So, 3 dealers say it's the tires... I don't think so. The vibration is in the same area with the same feel no matter what I do with the tires. I think it's the transmission related, driveshaft or something in the rear end, perhaps an axle shaft.

So, what do you think?"

Well, it turned out to be a bad 'NEW DRIVESHAFT'. As this poster explained, there is a T-SB regarding a 5'th gen vibrating driveshaft. Just may be something to look into...

PS: Your post may be confusing to others who want to help. you continue to mention the engine rpm wrt this vibration, but it's your speed (MPH) that is needed to isolate this problem. RPM and wheel vibration issues (in this case) are totally unrelated! Regards

Hi THEDK,

Please re-size your photo as it makes posting/reading this thread very difficult, thanks!

You have DBS, also known as Dry Block Syndrome. Smear some engine oil on there to get rid of those unsightly wrinkles....

nah- That's a completely normal casting. They all look like that- no worries.

If it is truely only RPM related, it should vibrate in neutral, park, drive, every gear, or anytime the vehicle hits that target RPM. Engine vibrations could be a number of things such as bad harmonic balancer, bad flywheel, bad torque converter, bad fan, bad cylinder, and so on. Tire balance is not connected to engine RPM so much as it is all about MPH. Generally, 55-80 are usually trouble areas for out of balance/out of round tires. If the vibration is only under fast acceleration, say 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, then you may have a pinion angle issue, driveshaft angle issue, or an issue with the drive shaft itself.

Your posts are very RPM specific so that makes me think it is either engine balance or driveshaft related.

As for the block looking the way it does, it is completely normal. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks. So just to confirm before i add this to my list.... No o else feels any increased steering wheel vibration under moderate acceleration between 2400-3000,rpm just before it shifts?

I'm leaning to driveshaft. No vibration in neutral. Will be fun convincing the dealer.

You should watch out. Stifler may accuse you of sending him back down this rabbit hole again. Btw...you may some very good points.

The reason we all say tires or wheels is that has been the case for 99% of the posters that complain of vibration. If not the tires then it could be several reasons starting with driveshaft. I can say that in the past 3+ years I have not read any other causes of vibration here. If the vibration is in the steering wheel only (put 1/2 glass of water in cupholder and see if it vibrates thereby proving it is felt other places besides steering wheel) then that means usually front end, again tires. Vibration in the seat usually means rear components. Good luck and I will go with Stifler and say tires. BTW my truck has a slight vibration every now and then. Do this for data:
Drive on every road surface using the same driving style like concrete, pavement, etc
If you say it is only a certain speed or RPM then go the same.
Good luck.

ya God forbid we start trouble shooting with the easiest and cheapest approach. The next time I pull the wiper fluid switch and nothing comes out I should probably replace the ball joints before filling the reservoir with fluid.:moon:
