Acceleration whine... its scaring me

Hey everybody, im new to 4runners and I’ve had mine a week now and it had a slight whine when accelerating, almost sounding like a small supercharger and it has progressively gotten worse and now shifting into 1st gear is getting harder and harder like the clutch isn’t engaging. It’s a 1999 sr5 with a 5 speed tranny. The weird thing is when i put the clutch in the whining stops 100%. What could it be? Low tranny oil or something worse? I’m getting just a tad nervous here. It has all new belts because that’s what i thought the problem was but it didn’t help a bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely a siezed throw out bearing. 1st gear doesn't have synchros so it will be a little difficult to shift. Don't jam it into gear when you want to down shift just press it into 1st with a little pressure and it will should slide in easy when its good and ready. Or just come to a complete stop.

Congrats on your new purchase. I have a 2000 with a 5 speed. Since you just bought it if you haven't already done so, don't only check the tranny and t-case fluids but all of them. You might want to change all fluids just so you have a baseline as to when they were changed, unless you know when the last time they were changed. I don't think that's your problem, but you never know. To me it sounds like a bearing, either the pilot bearing or perhaps the tranny input bearing. Don't think it's the throw out bearing, but you never know. Hard to diagnose those things without listing to it and driving it. If you know a car person it may not be a bad idea to get their thoughts. Any idea if the clutch has been replaced? How many miles are on it? Good luck. Mike M

well it has 178,000 miles one it so the engine is still young but i have no idea what it could be. Ill have to just take it to a mechanic and see what they have to say... man it was running so great like 2 days ago i dont understand what happened haha

IMO assuming the clutch is original, 178k is a lot of miles and there's a good chance that is the problem. I have 160k on mine and it is still going strong, but I would have no complaints if it went out. FYI: Though first gear can be a little harder to shift that the other gears, it is synchronize. Let us know what you find out. Where in Az are you located?

I'll say it again, throw out bearing. If it goes away when your pedal is depressed. Try acclerating with the clutch pedal depressed.

This is the opposite of what you think. If the throw out bearing was bad or seized, when step on the clutch it would grind and squeal and then stop when you let go of the clutch.

Sounds like you lost your transmisson fluid. May have been a slow leak.

The gears have worn and the extra slop has created the whine that you hear.

The transmission is hard to put in 1st gear because the transmission is no longer free wheeling in neutral. So essentially, the gear shifter is as it slides the fork to lock in the 1st gear cog, it has to force it in a rotation to let the cogs line up.

Try feathering the clutch as you engage 1st gear and it should slip right in.

Change the oil. Examine it. If it is full of metal or is really low, the tranny is NFG. If it does have metal or was low, try using some Lucas 140w gear oil and it might quiet it down.

I dont want to start arguments here guys i was just looking for some opinions, im gonna check the tranny oil tomorrow and see whats going on and go from there. I know its hard to diagnose over the internet but thanks for the help.

Wtf? Nooo I had 2 yotas both had exact same problem first changed fluids. Still had my noise, pulled tranny cus it would change with the pedal movement, means its clutch system problem. Both times throw out bearing was bad. It was shot, seized up hard to turn How are you going to say I'm wrong?? It is exactly related to the throw out bearing.
