Accidentally popped it in Reverse... at 75mph.

Any damage done? Sounded like the truck was in neutral, the RPMs increased alot because my foot was on the gas at the time. I popped it to N then to D without a problem. It's running smooth with no problems, but I'd figure I'd ask if anyone knows if I could've damaged anything in the tranny. Thanks.

i saw this on myth busters one time where they were trying different methods to stop a car without the brakes. they popped the tranny into reverse at 60 mph to see what would happen and it did not stop the car nor ruined the tranny. i guess from what they said, there is a safety mechanism that just in case something like that happens, it does not ruin the transmission. so my guess is your fine.

I remember reading a few weeks ago about a person who put the car in reverse going 60. It made a terrible noise and slammed to a halt and it ruined the transmission, the car guys, or whatever the guys are called in the Friday paper said, if you put the transmisson in reverse at high speed you could ruin it or some have a safety device built in. They said the way to check that is to go fast and put it in reverse.

It looks like you just found which way our 4Runners are.

These transmissions are controlled solely by a computer as is the input from the throttle. The entire system is drive by wire. I doubt they would allow an electronically controlled transmission shift into reverse at such speeds.

If anything happened, you would be well aware at it, nothing is minor at those speeds.

:iagree: I doubt the T4R transmission would even engage the R at those speeds.

In my younger, dumber days I used to do that on a 77 Caprice for fun:bugeye: Talk about smoke! Amazingly enough the trans never blew!

Im pretty sure we discussed this a few years back and determined that no damage will occur because of built in safety features. I doubt you did any damge.

Are there any volunteers out there who would be willing to put their transmission in Park at 75 mph to see what happens? :biggrin2:

I did it going about 25-30 in my neighborhood and the engine just shut off. So i pulled over and it started back up no problem.

my question is...how the hell do you 'accidentally' put it in reverse at 75mph?
im pretty sure any dmg done would have been obvious so youre good

Cool. I figured that it had a built-in safety override or something like that. It acted like it was in Neutral.

Unfortunately it's not a cool or funny story at all on "how" it happened. I wish I could say it was my girl who did it with her shoulder or waist, but that's not how it happened.... Some fat ass at my work apparently can't park next to - and walk between - my 4R and his ride. So he turns my passenger side mirror "in" so he can get by. It happens about 2x/wk on average. Well, this one time I didn't notice it had been turned in until I was on the highway. But I NEEDED the mirror because it was rush hour, so I rolled down the window, took off my seatbelt, leaned over, and popped the mirror back in place. Meanwhile I must've hit the shifter by accident. Got back in place and noticed that I was revving the RPMs but doing nowhere... then also noticed the shifter was in R. Thanks FatAss.

I would agree about the overide(if you want to call it that) functions to prevent damage. Kind of like our starters where the comp. won't let anything happen when the key is turned while running. Remember in the old days where if you did that and the horribly loud noise it made.... people knew from blocks away the stupid thing you did.

Atomic ...... glas all seems well with the mis hap.

i was drivng my drunk girlfriend around and she put it in park at about 30, but it didnt do anything but make a terrible grinding noise.

Haha! Let's hope you received some compensation for that :D

I was backing out of a shopping mall parking lot one day a couple years ago in my ZR2 Blazer and someone cutting through parking spaces not looking almost went right into me. To prevent my car from getting smashed up I throw the shifter into D and hit the gas in a split second while the car was still moving backwards. The transmission wasnt damaged but my rear differential was toast.

HAha. I did this once by accident. travelling around 75 mph. I downshift from D to 4th. when engine starts to make noise and increases RPM's, I push to hard and went to park. For some reason I cant get it back to D. So I decided to pull over. Its been almost 3 years now and still observing if I damage my tranny. hope not.
