acelerador out of controll

calling from costa rica. I have a 93 4runner that has a throttle problem. When I press the gas pedal hard sometimes this causes the throttle to stick or become set in high aceleration mode. very dangerous! I have to turn off the ignition to stop the engine. The gas pedal cable is in ldle position when I release the pedal but the throttle is stuck in full on position. What gives? The springs seem in good shape and the linkages are OK. Any Ideas?
By the way I love this car, 4x4 in use daily and the runner is handling the jungle conditions well. Also I'm on my own here as there is no qualified mechanic within 50 miles.

You have a manual connection between the throttle pedal and throttle body, and it's the position of the throttle body that the TPS uses to tell the injectors how much to squirt. Your throttle body has to be sticking open, that's the only way to cause what you're describing. If the gas pedal in the cab is returning springing back and the throttle stays open, I'd guess your throttle cable is not only stretched, but sticking. I'd replace it.

thanks for responding..I usually look for the most complicated solution. I hope the cable is the problem. The acceleration happens so intermittantly !! any way I have not had it stick today at all. thanks again

with the engine OFF, push the throttle all the way down, hard even. then release it. get under the hood and check the tb, see if its still open. you may need to do this several times, since its an intermittent problem.
