Acetone in the gas tank!

Hey guys, don't know if any of you have read about the possible effects of using acetone as a fuel additive. Promising results, as well as negative results have been reported, thus far.

Acetone is a very strong solvent that is used as a paint remover in industrial use. However, it has been reported, by thousands now, that adding 2-3 OZ. per 10 gal of pure acetone can significantly increase fuel economy.

I would like to know if any 4runner drivers have used acetone, and what their results have been. I'll post a few links below for informational use.

We use this stuff at work so maybe i'll put a drops in the tank and see what happens lol. It would be nice to have some more opinions first tho.

Google acetone in the gas tank, you will find a page that has results from all car types, but i don't see how those owners could tell if their gas tank was being dissolved.

haha Yah a dissolving gas tank would be something I'd like to avoid :biggrin2:

I researched this a few years ago and couldn't find anything solid to prove its effectiveness. I have nearly 2 years of fuel economy data for my 4Runner and have only failed to record 2 fill ups within that time. Now that I have so much data I should be able to try this out to see how well it works. If anyone else has at least 1 years worth of fuel economy recorded it would be great to try this out and then compare notes. I would like to stick to a particular brand fuel too.

This idea has been around a long time and I've never seen any real solid results and the people the messed around with it at the strip and on the street gave up on the idea as they saw no real results as it promises an octane increase also.

I personally wouldn't mess around with it in a modern engine/fuel system.

Yea, the truth is, no one has ever proven it to work, or not work. Some have soaked all their plastic parts in acetons for year and have seen no degradation, and some say it ruined their car. Also, driving habits may change when you are recording data, as opposed to when you are stamping on the pedal for fun, which could result in the differences that have been observed.

I would still like to see more studies done on this subject.

several years ago I did a 6month study with my f150 5.0. I recorded my mileage for a month then tracked mileage for every tank for the next 6 months. I added 6oz per 19 gal fill up. Over the 6 months I found that I got an average 2 mpg increase. I could not tell a difference in power (seat of the pants) and the truck ran really good before and did not diminish on the Acetone. After the 6 months I quit using because the cost of the Acetone offset the savings in Gas. YRMV :
