On a side note, does the sub rattle that plastic clip on door thing? Do you notice a difference in sound now? I guess the headunit has alot to do with it. The headunit is like the brain of your in car entertainment system and i noticed a huge improvement by simply installing my 3300bt pioneer headunit. So many future mods to do now!
 
Thanks! There's a huge improvement in sound quality. The sub isn't gonna rattle my neighbor's windows or anything like that, but the added bass frequencies round out the sound perfectly. Everything just sounds so much richer and more dynamic. The headunit does have a lot to do with that...I believe it puts out more power than the factory unit. I do like that the headunit has a separate subwoofer volume control, so I can tweak as necessary.

And no, I haven't noticed any additional rattling from the sub or the removable trim panel. At some point, I may add in some of that sound deadening material around the box and such, but for now it sounds just fine. It'll get the real test on my road trip over the next two weeks...!
 
Catfish,can I get the part numbers for other speakers that you replaced? I really like the looks of the sub,I think i'm going to try to do the same thing,if I can find a sub enclosure.I had an 1808 in mine and upgraded to the Alpine Premium,spliced on a female usb cable to the factory plug and can now use my Ipod or Sony mp3 player and control it through the hu.Thanks in advance for any info you can share with me.
 
Wow looks great! I've been looking into this for awhile, but thought it wouldn't have come out nice. Time for me to look for an enclosure and try this out.
 
imdav2u - The Pioneer speakers were model #TS-A166...I bought them about 10 or 12 years ago...I'm sure they're no longer manufactured. But really, any 6.5" speaker should fit...though you will need spacers for the front doors. The factory size for the front doors is 6x9, I believe. If you call Crutchfield, they can verify that size, as well as sell you the necessary spacers if you want to install the 6.5" speakers. As for the Clarions in the factory door tweeter location, they are model #SRG921C. Upon looking at the box, I just realized that they are actually 3.5" full range speakers...not 2". The trick with mounting full-range speakers in this location is mounting depth. These have a mounting depth of 1 5/16"...I wouldn't go much (if any) deeper than that. In order to get them to fit, you do have to drill a new screw hole through the factory tweeter bracket. I also installed bass-blockers in line with these speakers. Hope this helps...

Amazing Writeup. I always thought I would have to get the entire trim panel...like you said it's way expensive. I never thought about using what I already had! Does that panel rattle (the cover) mine is kinda loose anyways so imagine with some air behind there it would rattle. But, genius and very well done. Does your amp not fit where the jbl amp fit? I guess not since you put it under the seat. Again, great idea, makes me want to go to it now. Anyone selling their stock jbl enclosure ;)

No, the panel doesn't seem to rattle. Even with trimming down the ribs on the inside of the removable cover panel, it still barely rests on the trim ring of the speaker...where the screws holding the speaker in place are located. On the JL sub, this trim ring is a bit padded and the ribs don't appear to touch the foam surround or the speaker cone itself. Either way, the panel doesn't seem to be an issue.

Unfortunately, the amp wouldn't fit in the factory location. That spot is fairly small and it's tough to find an affordable aftermarket amp that does fit. I was bummed at first, but the under-seat install went well and you have to stand on your head to even see the amp. I'm happy with it. :)
 
Very nice install...I am a big fan of the "Stock" look. I plan on doing exactly what you did, but I want to squeeze a JL10w6 in there.
