adding a remote and getting at the ecu

98 4runner ltd 4wd

I bought a remote that matches the ID of the working one I have (BAB237131-022).

I see two programming procedures for adding this remote. I tried this one here:

Once I get to the step were I cycle the ignition on and off (either once or twice depending if you want to add or re-write) and remove the key, I am supposed to get one or two auto-cycles of the locks as an indicator that the dark gods were happy and I can proceed. Unfortunately this does not happen.

Maybe I am too slow in the earlier steps but I figured I would try the much simpler RS3000 instructions here:

Problem is my ECU is not under the seat. It is behind the glove box. Before I dig it out, can anyone verify that my ECU is even going to have the push button? The button is pictured on the side which would mean completely removing the unit and I am not sure you can do this without unplugging it.

Anyone else with a 98 ltd who has added a remote?

To be a RS3000 im pretty sure the box is under the seat. What does the box look like? The first link you posted is for a 99 and they used the RS3200. The remote you described is for the RS3000. What does the box look like behind the glove box? There should just be a button you use to program the alarm.

When you pull the glove box, you can see the end of the ECM, which covered with connectors and wire harness. There is no button. It is similar looking to the RS3000 picture - an aluminum box about 1.5" x 5" x 7" or so looking at the end - but that was just a drawing anyway, so I'm not sure how accurate it is. I cannot see either side of the ECM unless I remove it. Like I say, that may mean unplugging it, removing the box, plugging it in temporarily while its out, then reinstalling it.

Hard to believe your ltd would be so different from mine. Is there anything that tells me what box I am looking at?
 
I just dealt with this same issue on my 2002 limited. Basically, i found out that the BAB237131-056 remote didnt work on mine, and i have to get a FCC ID#: HYQ1512Y. And it took a few times, but i got the key/doorlock/dooropen pattern to work but not accept the remote. I kinda have gave up and decided to just get an extra key. I searched high and low for the ECU without any avail.

I'm pretty sure that the 99+ use a different system. Keyless was standard on those limiteds and then the alarm module was an add-on. On the 96-98 the dealer had to install the alarm with keyless. My alarm remote looks like yours. Do you have a Toyota security light installed near the parking brake lever? Do you have a black box under the driver seat zip tied to the carpet?

Yes, I have the Toyota Security light. I only see the seat motor under the drivers seat. How big is this box anyway? Is it plastic or metal? Is this the main engine computer (ECM) on your car or is it something else?

On my car, you can see a little of the ECM just above the top back edge of the glove box when it is open. It has 4 connectors from L to R, 2 fat ones, 1 narrow one, then 1 fat one. The connector size/arrangement is different than the pic for the RS3000.
 
It should be directly under the seat. They are supposed to zip tie the box to the carpet. The alarm, at least on my 97, was a dealer installed toyota accessory.

So its not actually attached to the seat at all, its on the floor under the seat?
 
I looked again under both seats - nothing but seat motors, and something like an air vent under the passenger seat. I did find the glass breakage sensor up under the dash. Kinda looks like the RS3000 but isnt. Electrical diagrams would help to locate it since it has to tie into the horn, lights and door lock circuits, but Haynes doesn't show any such thing. Any idea how the wiring harness for the RS3000 is routed inside the vehicle? Maybe mine is close by, like under the center console.

The driver side kick panel does have two ECU boxes one green and one black, but both are marked for 4wheel drive.
 
When I programmed my remote...I followed the directions exactly and it didn't work...but then I left out one of the last steps (can't remember which one) and it programmed. I programmed 2 remotes that way...even an extra remote from my wife's Rav4...and it worked fine....but I got another one so I could roll the back window down.

The step that some leave out is whether you cycle the key on to off only once, or do you do it twice. Once is just to add a fob, twice is to re-write over what was stored. Both should work. I tried both ways and I just don't get any response (locks cycle on and off automatically). I stopped there but maybe I should try continuing anyway.

I would remove the trim under the dash and kickpanel. Follow the wire from the piezo chirper or glass breakage sensor. You need to find the alarm computer. I mentioned they are dealer installed since you dont really know where the computer was installed. The instructions just say to mount it under the seat.
 
Just for the record, on this vehicle the passenger kick panel covers the ABS ECU.

I did remove the under dash trim and I can see the wires leading to both the security light and glass break module. They are zip-tied onto another harness. These wires seem to go up under the dash to the left. Not sure I can get to that area without a complete dash removal, but the dealer probably would not do that for an install, so I doubt the ecu is
there.

Ok, following those wires would probably work. As I mentioned the little box that makes the chirp noise when you lock the doors is in the engine bay. It is located near the fuse box in the engine compartment. It is a one inch cylinder with 2 wires. That wire comes in to the interior by a grommet near the steering shaft. When you pull the under dash trim there is a duct there. It is only held in with one screw. If you remove that you should be able to see all the wiring under the dash. We need to find this ecu because you have to push a button on it to program the remote. The key sequence only works on the later year cars.
