I just added a Subwoofer to my stock JBL system in my 05 4Runner Sport and I upgraded the speakers ONLY in front and rear doors.I tucked a RF bd 500.1 mono amp under the passenger seat with a remote bass volume control mounted up front.I also swapped out the JBL 6.5" speakers in rear doors with MB Quart QM160.03KX's and MB quart PCE 5 1/4" componets sets up front.I did not want to make a big project out of it with removing existing JBL in dash changer and amps and rear seat audio that my kids love.The stock JBL amps seem to have enough power for the quarts.I used a JL 10W/6 v2 in a custom built box and disconnected the factory sub.I used a Audiolink Power Link II for a low level signal to the amp.To my suprise it sounds awesome the bass really hits hard now.And best of all I still have the in dash changer and rear seat audio with headphones.I have a Homelink kit ordered through Toyota parts and am going to install VIP RS3200 security system and finish it up with a Lowarence I-way 500c navigation system

Hey welcome to the board! I too always thought the JBL system sounded good (other than lacking bass). Once I put 2 10" subs in the back it sounds really awesome. My next Audio updgrades will definitely be changing out the tweeters and the two front doors.

Do you know the impedance of the factory tweeters? Is it printed on the back of the tweeters? I have read the speaker in the bottom of the front door has 2.9 ohms printed on the back. You could also place an ohm meter on the terminals of the tweeter and measure impedance.
I am considering upgrading the front tweeters, but trying to figure out if I need 2 or 4 ohm as I am using the factory JBL head unit and JBL amp

The reason they are probibally 2ohm is that they are hooked in parrallel with the tweeter,my quarts are 4 ohm but run through a crossover and they sound great.a factory system usually will not use a passive x over for there seperates just a capicator for the tweeter and run the woofer at full range.
This is a cost saving method for them.I will post pictures soon,I also added
a subwoofer volume control knob in one of the knockout plugs in front of my console it works perfect and looks stock.I can dial in the amount of bass I want.I also noticed that the rear door speakers have a 200hz bass cut off
at the factory amp,so if you replace them dont expect too much bass from the rear door speakers,just mids and highs.I had to make a tweeter bracket
for the front doors,just unbolt the existing tweeter and trace around it to make a template,I used 1/8" steel and painted it black,for the 6X9" front doors I purchased adaptor brackets from crutchfield and they work great.I used 5 1/4" speakers.,you would not believe how much better it sounds

on the raido to compensate for the week factory subwoofer.If you want to try this I can tell you exaxtly what to do and what to buy.I have the JBL six
