Adding amp/sub to non-JBL stock system

I have an 06 SR5 without the JBL system, but with 6-disc changer, sat-ready and steering wheel controls. I would like to add the following:

Sirius
Amp and subwoofer

I'm happy with the stock HU, just want a little more bottom-end in my music. I don't need block-shaking boom, and I don't listen to a lot of hip-hop or bottom-heavy music.

I found a Sirius/ipod add-on module at replacementradios.com for around $230. So that would just leave the question of how to add an amp and sub. I have not pulled the HU yet, nor been able to find a wiring diagram/pinout. Is there a pre-amp level output on this unit? If not, I guess my option would be splicing in to the speaker leads, assuming my amp has that option.

Am I missing anything? Has anyone done similar to this type of system? Would I be better off just scrapping the whole thing and going with an aftermarket system? I really want to keep the steering wheel controls, and I know there are add-on adapters for that. I do have the Kenwood single CD/MP3 w/Sirius I pulled out of my old ride, so I could start there. I know that unit has pre-amp outs also.

Any thoughts, tips or experience would be welcome. Loving the new T4R so far, and will love it even more with decent sound!:surfer:

I think you will be better off scrapping the Toyota unit. There are no pre-out's and you will have to use a line level input attached to a speaker wire. To use your old stereo you will need a pac adapter to connect the steering wheel controls, and a seperate wiring harness.

I was in this boat and decided on an Eclipse head unit, and I never regretted it. Plug & play wiring, works with the steering wheel controls same as stock. I did need some additional add on's (back then) to have the Ipod & XM be displayed & controled from the head unit but I like it, I could hide the ipod that way. Overall I went all in and scrapped everything stock but can't be happier with the results. Cleanest sound I've ever heard (once I nipped that rattling plastic panel in the butt).

I actually think your best bet would be replacing your door speakers with something of more quality. I have 6.5" Polk MOMO in my front doors and before I did the subwoofers, they handled the bass pretty well. Obviously you should do whatever you want to do, but it will be a lot more money and work to hook up any kind of amp to the stock head unit, rather than purchase a new one with pre-outs. In my opinion when people run a subwoofer with factory speakers and factory head unit it sounds like crap. The bass will drown out the mids and highs.
