Adding Dexron VI into Dexron III?

This might be a dumb question, but I really need a definite answer before I do the power steering fluid.

I have a 03 V8. The power steering fluid is somewhat dirty or dark. Instead of flushing the whole system, I am thinking replacing a portion of it every time.

I added a bit of ATF Dexron III into the reservoir maybe a year ago because it seemed low. The level stays consistent since then, so I assume there should not be any other problem.

Now I noticed the fluid is not as red-ish as before and like to replace it. I would use a siphon pump to get some out and pour some in.

** Here's the question:
I have a good amount of Dexron III in the system. I went to Autozone and didn't find Dexron III, instead, I saw a lot of Dexron VI. Is it ok to pour VI into III?

GM considers Dexron VI to be "backward compatible," meaning GM recommends it for use in any vehicle that originally used any earlier version of Dexron and that it can be mixed with them. However, GM specifically recommends against using Dexron VI in non-GM made vehicles that used Dexron III as original equipment. Confusing......

I have a half bottle of Dexron III left from a year ago, can I still use it? Does it go bad after exposing to air for the extended period of time?

Thanks.....
