ADH8796 4runner Build

[ADH8796]

About a month ago I purchase an one owner 01 4runner with 111K miles. Has a few dings but overall is in great shape. With this build I was very tempted to SAS straight from the start. But after a little deliberation decided I would build it up the way I wanted and slowly peace together what I wanted for a SAS. I figure this way I can still enjoy wheeling and take my time to do the SAS the right way (not rushed).

Most of this build will be completed relatively quick. This is my 4th 3rd generation 4runner so for the most part I know what I want and I know what works.

Day I brought it

First thing I did was get the timing belt, water pump, belts, trans fluid, and transfer case fluid all changed out so I wouldn't have to worry about it.

I'll work on getting this more up to date tomorrow.

Yeah that was a killer deal to I ordered it from them without mounting braket's since they only made them for the tacoma's and then built my own mounts. Then all I had to do was narrow it 1.5-2" on each side and it was done. Super slim and great approach angle. Only cost me like $500 if I recall.

Thanks! Yeah I'm pretty bad with cars it seems once I build what I want I get board so I sell and start over. However this go around I'm not really going to have that option if I want to stay married.

I got up to date on all the maintenance stuff I order my wheels. That's been almost a month ago and I still don't have them. Hopefully see them sometime next week. But in the meantime I have ordered and received several things.

I ordered my front lift from Sonoran Steel. In the past I've run everything from spacers to full out coilovers. But the nicest ride I ever had was with my Tundra/OME setup and it flexed every bit as much as the coilovers. The rest of my lift I ordered from Toytec which included OME 891's, OME 60028 Comfort ride shocks, and 1" body lift.

When it came to tires I already knew what I wanted. I've ran a few different sets of tires but in my opinion BFG KM2 is by far the best on/offroad tire available. My last set road very smooth on the road and hooked up great in the rocks, snow, and dirt. I can't say much about how they handle in muddy conditions (I hate mud) but I've heard good things. But when it came time to order them in the size I wanted 35x12.50R17 they were on nation wide backorder and I was looking at a six week wait time. So after calling around a little bit I found that Discount tire direct still had a set and was willing to beat any price I could find.

Your second 3rd gen was awesome. I remember seeing that thing on YT when I first got my '97 and I always liked the bumpers & general setup on that rig. That '85 looks pretty bad ass too. I like a low rig w/big tires.

Glad to see you starting another build, this one should be good. It looks like you've got a nice foundation to start with and nice pile of parts ready to go on the 4Runner.

Thanks I really liked that front bumper and the LX450 wheels a lot. Yeah I'm a little partial to black but this most recent one was just by chance.

Are you going to be running beadlocks? The 17" wheel size makes me wonder...

We'll shoot you caught me. I wanted 17's so when I finally do SAS I can still get a road friendly tire in a 37. Beadlocks were certainly not a must but something I've always wanted on a rig so I'm finally doing it.

To balance the tires I'll be using 8.5 ounces of these per tire. Beats the heck out of sticky weights or standard wheel weights especially for a grand total of $17 for 5 tires.

Also pickup up a vortex muffler,B&M tranny cooler, & some wheel spacers

And finally got around to installing the tranny cooler and bypassing the OE cooler to avoid the pink milkshake effect

Being that I can't mount my tires until my wheels show up I've opted to wait to install my suspension lift. Went ahead and installed the body lift so it won't really change the ride or the look for now.

I also went ahead and disabled my DRL's and installed a switch to control ATRAC/VSC.

And a temporary label for the switch

Disabling the DRLS was more simple than I would have thought just cut the wire.

Does 8.5oz of beads really do the trick for tires that big? I'd love to run beads if I have a good feeling that they'd work well. If they work, the tires stay balanced for the life of the tire....which is pretty sweet in my opinion.

ADH, you should post a review of how those BB's work out for you once you get the wheels/tires mounted.

I took a look at this chart to determine roughly how many ounces I needed per tire Aggressive Tire Chart this chart is specifically for Dyna beads but should work just fine for air soft apllication as well. The chart recommends 8oz per tire but adding more than you need won't hurt anything unlike not having enough.
