Adios transmission???

So my 4Runner has been making a whine/squeel for about a month or so....the pitch goes with the RPMs...sounds almost like a power steering squeel but turns fine and the power steering fluid is fine.

So today I tow a lawnmower to my bosses house that he bought...and when I pull up to his house my 4Runner is making a sputtering noise from the back of the engine compartment. Wasn't doing it when I left my house this morning...but I had to go up some massive hills to get to his house.

So I took it by Firestone so they could do an engine diagnostic....they turned it on and said that I needed to take it to a transmission shop...they didn't even hook it up to a diagnostic......

The weird thing is that it is shifting fine, not missing any gears, etc.....

It is an automatic.

Auto Zone did or still does free scans.

If you have a Harbor Frieght or similar they have a tool that looks much like a stethiscope, but is used in the automotive world to find noises. I would try this personally.
 
Is it going to hurt anything else if I have to drive it a few more days before taking it in?

Still shifting fine...but the noise is pretty loud.
 
No one can help without more details. Could you possibly take a short video with sound?

All we have to go on is a sputtering noise from the back of the engine. Could be something simple like an exhaust leak.
 
I will see if I can do that today or tomorrow.

I am mainly concerned if I should even be driving it if indeed it turns out to be the transmission. Someone mentioned 'don't let it grenade' or something....
 
I understand your concern - I went through a similar transmission problem (no noise, but the possibility of something "grenading"). Does it make the sound only when driving, or also when parked and idling? If something in the transmission is actually making the sound, a rebuild or replace (from a donor) might be your only options anyway...so I say if it shifts fine, drive it, but get it looked at ASAP.
 
It makes the noise in question only when it is idling or sitting still while in gear (Drive or Reverse)...but when you start driving that sputtering noise goes away (which led me to think it could be exhause related) but then while driving there is a whining noise (I would compare it to a power steering pump whine) but the power steering is fine and the fluids look good.

The guy at Firestone cranked it up and listened and said it needed to go to the transmission shop.

My sister's b/f is a mechanic, so I am going to take it to him on Thursday and leave it with him until after Christmas. His friend is a Yota mechanic, so he will definitely be able to figure out what it is. I just hope it doesn't cost a ton.

Only 104K miles? Def. out of the norm.
Do a search on "pink milkshake of death", or "Strawberry milkshake of death", etc... you get the picture.

I have an automatic from a '96 Limited 4X4 for sale. 144K miles when the truck was rolled. Still under the truck in the back yard.
$400 and anyone on T4R can have it.
 
Mine makes the same noise, thought it was power steering pump but i changed the fluid and that didnt fix it. I'm convinced it's the belts because it does it on a cold start and goes away slightly when its warm, but will still whine if i get on the gas.
I don't think I have to be in gear. To all those who think they have the problem, thats the key..His only whines IN GEAR
 
mine only wines in gear also and when I let off gas goes away, and doesnt get any better once warm.. but it does seem to be getting worse since its been cold out..

Topdown im only around 3 to 4 hours away from you. If i do end up needing a new tranny i might have to take you up on that.

I truly hope you don't need it, but it is here for ya if you do. :thumb3:
