Adjust wheel bearings on 85 4-Runner

I would like a detailed explaination on how to adjust the front wheel bearings on my 85 4-Runner with the stock solid straight front axle as I have never done it before and I do have the factory service manual.Thanks in advance.

If you already have a FSM you're ahead of the game.

Are you just adjusting the bearings, or did you replace some/all of them? Have you disturbed the shims under the baering caps ???

If you've removed the top/bottom caps, you must put the shims back in the way they came off. (Unless you have the Special Service Tool called out in the FSM to redo them properly.)

Anyway, the procedure used by most of us is to torque the bolts to the low end of the range specified in the FSM and check by pulling with a fishing scale per FSM (with tie rods disconnected from the steering arms). If it's too loose torque the bolts down a little more.

I've completely rebuilt 2 axles and used this method w/good results.
