Adjusting crossbars on roof rack??

Hey everybody I am trying to see if there is another way to adjust the crossbars on the roof rack?? I am installing a Yakima Loadwarrior and it states in the directions the factory crossbars need to be 30" apart and mine are about 26" apart. I have tried to loosen the tabs on each side but they are way too tight. Are there any other ways to loosen them?

I've had to break mine loose with pliers. I wrap the thumbwheel with a rag so I don't mark it up too much...

I tried that but I will try it again. I didn't think about putting a rag over the thumbwheel to keep it from scratching.

That's what I had to do, too. Plus think about which direction was the right one to loosen, not tighten .... :bonk:
