Advanced the timing 3 Degree's

What does this mean and does/can it have any negative effect on my truck?

My mechanic said he thought the truck was a bit sluggish so he "advanced the timing 3 degree's". He said this should improve milage and also make it a bit more responsive. So far I guess it does seem a little more snappy around town.

My only question is though, will this possibly cause any other issues with the engine?

so, i actually re****ed my timing a coulpe of degrees due to some valve noise. seemed to quiet down afterwards. you can advance or re**** the timing easily by turning the distributor left or right. just a matter of loosening the bolt, and turning while watching the timing marks on the harmonic balancer with a timing light. hope he didnt charge you too much for it. it will increase your pep a little, but if your car has that many miles, it probably is being corrected anyway by the knock sensor, which does the same thing automaticly when it dectects any knock. if your mechanic doesnt drive a toyota 3.0, it probably SEEMED slugish anyway. what RPM does yours idle at in park?

Haha, so Ive had a few days to drive it around and it seems quite a bit better to drive. More pep as you say, but again I cant really be sure until it cools down a bit. Temps have been up over freezing level now for the past few days so I wont really know until it drops back down to the -10 -15 area.

Before the change it was idling around 800rpm when warm. Now its dropped to around 650 ish rpm when warm. Also noticed that when its cold it doesnt idle so high. Its about 1200-1300 at the moment when before it idled at least 1500-1600 at times.

Again, I need to wait til it gets colder again before I will know for sure. When it was -15 or below the truck would idle almost up around 2000rpm and kind of pulsate between 1700-2000 on really cold mornings to begin with.
