One of the most expensive and unreliable systems in your car is the air conditioner - particularly in colder climates where the system may not be used between November and April, and therefore remains mostly dormant.
In 1993, most cars manufacturers were forced to switch their systems over to the use of R134A, a type of refrigerant that is ozone layer friendly.
Most engineers protested vigorously that the new Freon was toxic, corrosive and very much less efficient than R12. But once they get the bit between their teeth, Americans proceed apace and R12 became the illegal flavour of the month almost overnight. At one point in time, the most lucrative smuggling operation in the USA was Freon, because 140 million Americans were left without any repair options for their automobile air conditioning (A/C) systems.
Worse than that, we immediately began to see major system failures after only one or two years of ownership. At one time A/C warranty claims were the most prevalent manufacturer
