Advice about blacking out lights

Well I received my tint from rvinyl today and I'm pretty pissed. I had to pay $35 extra to get custom rear tint for 2003 (not the 2006 they sell for $25) including the rear reflectors and third brake light but they sent me the 2006 tint with no reflector or 3rd brake tint. I think the lights are shaped differently (?), I couldn't get it to fit so that it covered the entire light. It seemed like there should be a hump somewhere in the light where mine was smooth.
So... I guess I'm gonna give the VHT a try. Any hints about applying it? I'm really worried I'm gonna go too thick and not get any light transmittance.

Are you using a heat gun? If not, you have to in order to stretch it out; that's why it seems like it's not fitting correctly. I am pretty sure the size and shape of the 03-09 tail lights are the same; I think the only thing that changed was the fact that they are LED's in the 06+

pita

tried to take my lights off yesterday so i could paint them (06 LED's) and the 2nd bolt required to remove it was so stinkin hard to even get to! how did anyone take their taillights off??

the way you described, it is difficult to get that 2nd bolt. It may be easier if you remove some interior panels but you should be able to get to it without.

Mine unscrewed easily once I broke the nuts loose.

yee

got it done!!! looks good:) gettin rims powdercoated black within the next month, possibly May sometime, so the black lights'll go great wit my black Limited rims!! may even paint headlights to get the whole car matchin!

Powdercoating: would that work for original 2003 wheels with surface corrosion? How much$ thx.

Not really the right thread for this post, but yeah it'll work. Just make sure the powdercoater sandblasts the wheels first.

I had mine powdercoated "iron gun metal glimmer" and it's holding up great so far (~10 months)

My guy charged me ~$50 to sand blast and ~$100 per powdercoat I think. I got 2 layers of gunmetal and a clear so it cost me about $350. The most expensive place I talked to wanted $440 so it shouldn't be much more than that.

RE: pics???

Tails still look good, im happy about them. I get to pick it up on monday afternoon from the wheel powdercoater since im in school during the day and tomorro everythins shut down cuz we celebrating my Jesus:) but i'll post the current one as soon as i upload them to photobucket, should be only a few mins if i can remember how to set them up haha. Sorry for quality, both taken from phone and then compressed...

the kit came with the reflectors and tail lights. but it also came with 2 other long skinny pieces that looked like they could be a 3rd brake light but were nowhere near the size of the one on my 4Runner. im just going to have my tint guy do the 3rd brake light when i get the limo tint put on the back windows this summer

Nice, looks good. Makes me wanna do mine...

Unfortunately I can't order from RVinyl, the guy sent me an incomplete kit and we got into a bit of an argument. He didn't send the reflector or 3rd brake lamps but claimed he did after ignoring me for a few weeks. I got pretty angry, not sure he'd deal with me fairly now.

I may have to get a 3rd party to order for me and hope he sends those this time hahah

I think its odd they were so harsh against you. My first set came in and I thought the covers were cut wrong but I was just really bad at applying them. I sent them a message about how unhappy I was and they imidately relpied asking if they sent me a new set free of charge I would be happy, even though it was my fault they were messed up. Second time around when I knew how to apply them they turned out great. They seemed really concerned about customer happiness. Maybe they realized how many customers they were pissing off and are trying to make up for it?

Nice looks good.. time for some lift/tires?

Which tint did you get Jaybird? Yours doesn't look as wakeboardman's, although it could just be lighting.

lift may be the next move... tires still bout 30% til i need some better ones! I used VHT niteshade spray, had 2 layers done and took right at 2 hours to make sure all was dry and whatnot. But thanks, really lovin the rims already haha, guess you could say i was jumping for joy as i saw them:girl:

his are definitely lighter than mine. mine look black in any light. it amazes me how bright the tails are when i use the brakes or blinkers though. i think the slight tint looks really good too. one of those subtle changes that looks better but unless you knew the difference you wouldn't be able to point out immediately

yea, and that pic was also in direct sunlight, so it is a bit darker than that. my truck's tails were straight black, dad had trouble seein brakes at midday, so he didn't want me goin too dark on these. yea, i like the subtle look too, accents the rims well now

it looks really good with the gray too. i like that color a lot.

yea, the only other color i would want besides my galactic gray is ur white honestly... i love white on all black. Saw one the other day on BlairB's build thread wit a white shrockworks bumper and it looked so awesome...
