Advice needed: Changing door and ignition lock cylinders

Hello All,

My bike and toddler trailer got stolen last night, and I'm pretty sure my 2000 4runner keys were in the trailer storage bag. Since the thief apparently now has keys to my 4runner, I should probably change the locks just to be safe.

Is there a particular aftermarket brand of door and ignition lock cylinders that is better? What should I look for? Where should I order them?

How do I get door and ignition cylinders that use the same key?

Any and all advice is appreciated!

Install a fuel kill switch tomorrow.

It is the blue wire that runs along the drivers side door well. Google 4Runner fuel kill or cutoff switch.

Also search on YotaTech.

I wouldn't spend $600 (my guess) to re-key my whole truck just because someone who stole a bicycle might have the key. Auto-theft in the US is a considered a MAJOR crime and it is unlikely (but still possible) that someone who stole a bike would also want to steal a car, especially if you are in a college town.

Just install a fuel cut-off switch and hope for the best.

x2. I love my 4runner but would risk the chance. If she gets stolen you can always get another. The Colorado market is flooded with them. I would make sure my insurance is very good just in case and remove anything of value out of the inside. Keep the car in a well lit area for several months if not a full year. If a thief is going to steal the car they are going to do it regardless if they have the keys. In this case it just makes it easier. It is also possible the thief doesn't know it is to a 4runner. Most Toyota keys look very similar. They might think they have just scored keys to a Toyota Cressida.

In the future do what I do, I never use the original keys. I leave the original keys at my house with a key fob as a spare set and always use a copy. This way if you ever lose them you have lost a $1.00 metal key with no markings and not the originals.
 
Thanks for the replies. I will mull over my options. I have a query in to an auto locksmith, but I suspect re-keying will not be cheap.

The problem is that the thieves came in behind a 6' closed gate into our front porch area to steal the bike and trailer. My 4runner and our Subaru were in the driveway. So it does not take an Einstein to figure out what cars the keys go to.

But I agree, auto theft is much bigger deal than bike theft. Petty theft is rampant in our college town, but car theft not so much.

True there are many 3rd gens for sale, but replacing my 2000 4runner, 3RZ 2.7 5 speed. which I searched high and low for, would be harder than finding one with a V6.

Plus, we have a kid now and I might wind up with a d#mn mini-van if my runner gets swiped!
