Advice needed on Brake - 2001 4Runner

Hello all,

I'm the newbie to fixing car. Beside oil change, this is my first time learning how to change front brake on my 2001 4Runner. I have 100K miles on the car and the pads have not been replaced yet. I think i'm a good driver and try not to brake too often unless it's neccessary.

I took it to Sear for inspection couple months ago and they said they're still good an only changed my brake
fluids and adjust the backup hand brake. Before taking it to Sears, i occassional have vibration when braking during downhill at high speed (50-70 mph or so). don't know if this is related to Brake system or not and i totally forgot to mention that to Sears. Anything wrong with this?

If i'd like to replace the pad, would you please advise which "best" aftermarket brake pads i should buy? I asked the dealer and they said they're $90-100 a pair. I know you should be able to get the same quality OEM one for 1/2 cost but don't know. I live in Northern california and have access to Kragen,Autozone etc...

Many Thanks,

MN

If you are getting shaking in the wheel your rotors are more than likely warped, your drums may well be warped a bit as well. I just recently turned the drums and rotors on my 02 and what a difference. At 100k if the rotors have not been turned you may be able to have them done and get away woth new pads, but if they have been turned being so thin to begin with I would replace them. I used powerslot rotors and Hawk pads, but they are pricey. I have heard good things about Bendix but other than that I don't really use parts store parts, I always try to buy something better than stock. I just used OEM for my rear drums and shoes.

Theoretically there's quite a lot of extra weight that could be towed above the maximum listed capacity, but if you can keep the load and strain on the vehicle as low as possible, that's the best way to do it. It will be safer for you, and better for the vehicle.
