Advice on adding options to used 4Runner.

I am looking to spend 20K to 23K on a used 4Runner. 2WD is fine/ Most I am seeing in the price range are '04 SR5's and there are a few '05s. From what I am seeing most of these are relatively low in options. I know I can add a sunroof and leather. IS there a reaonable way to add the 3rd row seat. If I want all this stuff, I realize I probably should just pony up the additional cash up. What do y'all think? How much will I likely spend to get 'the good stuff'? Is the 3rd row seat very usable? can anyone comment as to added leather or roof? Thanks.

If I had the money, I'd definately be looking into a sun roof and 3rd row seating.

How much would both these cost?

The sunroof and 3rd row seats have to be installed at the factory. You probably can have an aftermarket sunroof installed, but it would cost the same if it was already on the truck. In addition, would you want somebody cutting into the roof of your new truck? The only trim that comes with leather from the factory are the Limited's. If an SR5 or Sport has leather, it was either installed at the port or added aftermarket. As for the functionality of the 3rd row seats, they are only suitable for small children. No adult would fit comfortably back there because it is small. I really don't know how much you should expect to pay for a used 4Runner. Have you considered a 2003 model? They are basically the same except for some cosmetic differences. 2005 is the year all of the major things were changed like more hp (V8) and 5 speed transmission (V6).

I am on my second 03 4runner. (check my signature). I have never had any serious problems or for that matter any problems at all. I have loved them both very much... but I love my sport edition the most. Have you looked into a 03 sport. I once called around for aftermarket leather and I got quoted 800. I would guess that it would be any where from 800-1200 but i m not really sure

Now that we have corrected my ignorance...were there any deficiencies in the '03 as a first year product?

only really cosmetic differences. In mid 2003, they pulled the unpainted wheel wells. Fog lights became standard. all i can think of at the moment since I haven't had my morning coffee. :)

For the options you are looking at adding, roof ,3rd row and leather. I would recommend you keep looking until you find one already equipped the way you want it. Compare an '03 Limited to an SR5 in the used market you will find the price difference is only 2-3 grand.

The only issue in '03 I am aware of was the fuel rail issue on the '03 V6's. Other than that, nothing of consequence.

I would not add a sunroof to a vehicle that wasn't factory equipped. Factory equipped models include drains for any water that might come through the seal and galvanize the inside of the roof metal to prevent rust. If there was no sunroof, these drains and galvanize coating are not there, and any leak could turn into rust quickly.

Third row has been discussed before, but you would need to add the brackets and anchors for the seats and seat belts and order the trim and seats themselves. If this could be done aftermarket, you'd probably be looking in the neighborhood of 2-3 grand to do it safely, and even then, I'd be wary of this.

With all of the rebates and incentives now, you'd probably do better coming up with $25k - $26k and getting a brand new SR5 with 3rd row and sunroof.
