Advice on Transporting an unopened gobi 5th gen full rack?

I am picking up a Gobi rack tomorrow (unopened) in a private sale. I read up on this, and it looks huge as packaged!

Will this fit in the back with seats down in a way that I can tie down the tailgate so it doesn't stick out unsafely?

OR, Is it better to use blankets and try and strap it on top of the factory rack?

Anyone have any experience with this?

I have one in my garage right now in he box waiting to install. I can’t see anyway possible to fit one in the back with how it’s packaged. Maybe rent a u haul.

Can it be strapped to the top once the box is removed from the wooden pallet?

I unpacked mine and put in the back with the seats down. strapped it in with the tie downs in the trunk, then tied the hatch down. It beeped the entire drive to the shop but was safely in there.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to go rent one of those $19 Home Depot aluminum bed trucks.

Not sure how feasible this will be for you. However since the Gobi is a no drill rack, it honestly would not take much time at all to install it on site (if you can manage to find someone else to help you lift it onto your roof). Then break down your stock rack, which would easily fit in the 4runner. It took me less than 30 minutes to put on my baja rack and that includes putting some silicone around the roof holes (granted I bought it Used but I wouldn't think there is too much assembly with a gobi). It's just a thought, however it would guarantee safer transport of the rack (since it'll already be installed haha).

Rented a home depot truck and am SO glad i did it this way.

"Looks huge" confirmed...it was indeed. Strapping to the roof would have been a huge PITA if not very dangerous to boot given the distance i had to drive.

Renting a truck was def the way to go. Cost about $50 with gas. Well worth it for those considering the same.
