Advise on a welding machine

Not sure where else to post, so I will ask here. I am looking at the Lincoln Weldpack at Home Depot, the 140 series. Mig set up, shield gas capable

I do not know how to weld, but like everything I have done, good with my hands, I want to learn.

Will be used for trailer work, not heavy duty. Is this a good system to start with? Would like to stay with 110v system.

It will probably be ok to get your feet wet in welding... (Don't weld with your feet wet btw) I used one similar for years with flux core wire before I upgraded and man what a difference!

You may soon want to be upgrading... And then the money on the 110 welder would be wasted.

Course maybe you use it a couple times and never have another need either...

So,

If I were to recommend a long lasting welder that'll do sheet metal to 1/4 plate and make beautiful strong welds, it would be something around a Hobart Handler 180 (Even the 140 which is a good price) with a tank of gold gas. Then just make a nice heavy duty extension cord for your 240 dryer plug to use that. (I eventually put in 240 sockets n the garage, but still use the extension when I need it out on the driveway)

Still, the Lincoln is a decent price and will work ok for smaller jobs...

I disagree.

I used a similar Lincoln welder for quite awhile, honing my welding skills and using flux core wire. When I finally wanted a bigger welder, a Miller 180, I was stoked to now have two welders. I think the smaller one is better for sheetmetal, plus flux core is awesome for outside farm type duty.

The welds I get are way nicer with my Miller, but I never had an issue with my Lincoln, just had more cleanup.

Hey thanks for the advise, both of you have great points. Even though I said I would like to stay with 110v, I do have a 220v/20 amp circuit in my garage, not sure what the original owner used it for, but it is available, possible a welding circuit?

So I may expand the search, possible the Lincoln Weld Pack 180? My welding will be limited to light trailer work, work on my 77 Bronco and other light stuff.

I picked up a hobart handler 140 and it has impressed the hell out of me.

I've had a Lincoln 180 for about ten years now. I also have the weld gas set-up. Works great for around the house up to about 1/4" steel. At my former job, we used Esab, Lincoln, and Miller machines (much bigger machines) and they all worked great. Some day I would like to get a TIG welder for my garage.
