Advise? V8 or V6??

Howdy folks...I'm about to get an 06 4-runner and I am a bit split between the V6 and the V8.

Dealer is offering the V8 at the same price as the V6 (looks like they really wanna move the V8) but I'm concerned obviously about the MPG.

Just wanna hear from your V6 and V8 2WD owners to see what the "real world" MPG would be on the V6 versus the V8.

I love the 4Runner, but you're not buying it for the gas mileage. :)
The difference between the two is very minimal, like 1 or max 2 mpg.

With the V8 I'm getting around 15.5 with mostly stop/go city driving and short commute. Got more like 19 on one longer ride that was all expressway. EPA rating is 16/19, so I'm right there.
 
It is really common sense. The mileage between the two engines is insignificant. Get the V8 because it is more powerfull. Generally people will get the V6 because they can not afford the extra money that is normally charged for the V8.
 
 
The v6 has plenty of power, I have one, if you are never going to tow, the 6 does the job. However I never thought I would tow and now come up short cause I would like to tow a car and trailer and can't with the 6. For no extra money , I'd go with the V8. Might be harder to sell the V8 though.
 
i get 15-16 mpg when i drive mostly city. i get 17-18 when i drive half city/half highway. can't really go wrong either way. i say get the V8 just to one up your neighbor.
 
Both V6 and V8 have their advantages and a drawback or two. V6 has better oil filter location, timing chain and newer engine design. V8 is torquier, smoother/quieter and the engine has been around long enough that it's a proven design. But basing it solely on mileage, you're probably only going to gain a mile or two in MPG. For the same price and if there's even a remote possibility of towing, get the V8.

That's a pretty presumptious comment... You don't know anyone's circumstances but you have the nerve to come up with some sweeping generalization of their bank accounts :confused: What an idiotic statement...:headslap:

The V8 was going to be only about $1500 more when I bought my V6. I could easily afford that but I chose not too because I didn't need the V8. I don't tow anything, no boat, no trailer, nada. Why do I need the extra grunt of the V8? The ability to switch from 2WD to 4WD when I needed it is an awesome feature. Since I use this truck for commuting, that extra fuel mileage helps. I turn around and use the fuel savings for my motorcycle or more upgrades for the truck.

Buy whatever floats your boat, not because you want to impress your neighbor.

That is called V8 envy. At least one person on this thread admitted that they could not afford it. That is nothing to be ashamed of either. It is the premium engine offered in the 4Runner. Any gas savings between the two engines will be insignificant.
Maybe you can step up to a premium beer once a month on the meager gas savings between the two engines. Do you feel like a big man now calling me an idiot? You definitely have some issues about not getting the V8. Just relax I'm sure your little 6 banger is nice.
