AFE intake 4.7L V8 Review

AFE used to make the TRD intake for the 4.0L. They make one with the pro dry filter for the 4.7L. Noticeable growl at partial and WOT due to removing the silencers. The V8 now sounds wicked with the URD exhaust and this AFE intake. Maybe 10 hp difference. Quality is excellent. Everything bolts up as it should and unlike the cheap sequoia eBay intake I gambled on, no CEL.

I found a gentleman that makes custom acrylic covers for this intake. His SN is Coupe on tacomaworld. Spruces up the engine bay for the time being and allows me to keep an eye on the filter.

Outerwears hydrophobic prefilter is also in the mail. I run these on the GTR. Very effective at keeping the original filters clean.

Overall, happy with the sound of the intake. I wouldn’t purchase it for the minimal performance gain.

Thanks for the review! I have the Volant cold air intake and has an extra opening on the side of the air box, I suppose for more air flow? Definitely need to get the Outerwear Pre-filter because my air filter is exposed on the outside of the frame pretty bad!

I'd like to eventually get a snorkel.

Thanks bud, I looked on their website and saw the specific pre-filter for the Volant dry air filter that I currently have.

I got in touch with Coupe over at Tacomaworld and too bad he doesn't make the acrylic cover for the aFe anymore, was thinking of changing to Afe, but we'll see.

Looks awesome! Did it come with that acrylic cover and TRD decal, or was that an aftermarket thing? I currently have the drop AFE filter in the stock box and had no plans to go aftermarket because most of the designs I’ve seen will make sound, but actually hurt performance by being hot air intakes (instead of cold air as they are advertised). This one looks like it is designed similar to the stock, other than the cone filter. I wonder why they didn’t just design it around their drop in panel filter. The surface area of that cone is probably the same as the panel, if not, maybe even a bit less. When using cone style filters, I prefer the S&B design which has an internal cone as well to add maximum surface area.

Hi all, new to this forum.

Going to look at a 2004 SR5 4.7L and the guy has a makeshift cold air intake on it. I would prefer a stock OEM one, but cant find one on ebay or anywhere for cheap. Anyone on here have one and want to part with it? Thanks in advance. Always wanted the 4.7 4runner... hopefully it is as nice as the guy says it is.
