AFE Pro Dry S Filter available now

I just thought I'd let y'all know that there is an alternative to the K&N oiled filter.

AFE offers it in both the Oiled and Oil Free (Dry) styles. I just bought the Dry one from Auto Anything last night. I had an AFE CIA on my 08' Tacoma with the Dry filter, and IMO It was easier to deal with than the Oiled ones.

I have only seen threads regarding the K&N. If this has been mentioned before and I missed it, just send me a PM and I'll delete the thread. Thanks

I just checked AFE's site and they only have the 'oiled' ones listed for the 4R, nothing about the dry ones yet? I guess they could be slow to update their site, but stuff like that always make me hesitate a little. Let us know if it fits!

^ you have to click on the picture next to the throttle body spacer, which is a pic of the blue oiled filter. Then on the next page change the type dropdown selection to pro dry s. It's there.

Installed it right before I left work, drove home, not long enough drive to really notice a difference in power, a mile. I did notice a whistle though sounds like a turbo, lol. I'll drive it more tomorrow and post my thoughts. I have been averaging 16 mpg on the 4Runner display so I'll see if there is any difference there. I'm sure I'll get better throttle response, there is a lot less material there blocking the air flow.

I haven't seen an improvement in gas mileage at all. I've mostly been driving in the city though. Not much Hwy driving. I do still have that whistle every now and then, think I hear it more when its cold out. It does feel like I can stay in gear longer when cruising up hill than before.

For some reason with my last tank of gas, my 4Runner didn't seem like it had much power and I was getting lower than average mpg readings on my scanguage. Since I refilled though last week, my mpg readings are back to normal and it does feel like I have a bit more power.

When I hit the gas my exhaust note is a tad bit louder and It does feel like it accelerates a little bit quicker also. I never disconnected my battery after installing, so I'm not sure if that is delaying any performance gains.

All in All, I'm happy with it, I'm sure when it warms up some, I'll notice an increase in power and mileage. I always seem to get the best mileage and performance when its 70-90 degrees outside.

Just got it via UPS today, will do the install when I get home tonight. I will keep an ear out for the 'whistle'.

Yep, I hear it! It is very faint, only there at certain rpm's upon acceleration, but it is there. Now that being said, that is with the stereo off, as soon as I turn it on it the whistle is 'hidden'. I highly doubt that I will switch back to the stock one, but I was really surprised at how thick the stock one was! It has a pre-filter to the main filter (as seen in the pics above), never seen one like that before. I can see how the new one would let air in easier.

got my dry air filter in today and wasn't able to locate anywhere in the pubs on how to pull out the old one. I'm sure i can just figure it out on my own but if its where i think it is on the left side it looks like i need to disconnect a few things and just want to make sure i'm doing it right...any suggestions?

There are just 4 clips that hold the air box together. Un-snap those remove old filter and insert new filter.

Just found this, looks like this company might be working on a Snorkel. 5th Generation 4Runner Snorkel | Expeditioneers

I wouldn't mind adding a snorkel to mine, at the very least it would allow my engine to breath cleaner air while out in the desert.

There probably isn't much demand for a 5th gen 4Runner snorkel unfortunately so might be some time before we see them popping up for sale.

Hi all, any additional caveats in regards to the AFE dry? I don't think the whistling will bother me at all since my radio is on 80% of the time. I'm thinking of an aftermarket filter when it's time to replace the OEM one. I'm familiar with the K&N oiled filters and had one for over 70k miles without any problems. But would like to try something else. Thanks.

MOST aftermarket filters will give some kind of whistle when throttle is given, its not something to be concerned about. I'm a turbo car guy so the more whistle the better lol.

I had a K&N in my 99' 5.9L Durango and it was silent. Even with the hood open and throttle applied still no 'whistle' like I have with the AFE Dry. It is not enough to bother me though. I've ridden with a few other people with the K&N's and never heard a 'whistle' either. Too many factors to really narrow now why I'm sure (dry vs oiled, general design between the two, designed and air flow direction/pressure through the vehicle, better sound proofing, etc.) It does not bother me enough to change but it may to others, all depends how 'picky' you are

I personally like the whistle sound. I usually only hear it under a load around 2k rpms though.

I had a K&N Oil Filter in my 88' 4Runner and when I held it up to the light you could see the light in some areas through holes. I'm not a rocket scientist, but I don't think you should see the actual light through an air filter. I've stayed away from K&N since then. That's just my personal reasoning.
