Just curious why you think you need BSM? Do you have a physical disability so you can't turn your head? And I'm being totally serious.

At night in rain the mirrors are not sufficient. Turning to look won't take into account a car that moves quickly after I've looked into the next lane to me. I recently drove my wife's Lexus for a few weeks. BSM is just safer.
Another solution is to run cameras from both blind spots of the car and have a live monitor on. That way no sneaky little bastard can get past ya. lol
I used an aftermarket BSM one from amazon, but after a year, it quit on me. Plus there was too many false positives where a simple bush or fire hydrant on the sidewalk would trigger it to beep making you think it was a pedestrian, Its annoying to those who are annoyed by the constant false beeping.
Currently have a wider rear view mirror with side mirrors attach, i think that one suits my needs if i want to check my blind spot without turning my head much.

As someone who drives more than 100k miles a year, I feel I can offer some insight on this. Whether you agree or not, is another story.
I view BSM, cameras, and radar are effective TOOLS, that can HELP you accomplish your task, which is driving safely. I personally don't ever rely on things completely that can make me more complacent in my driving. Having said this, I have driven vehicles with BSM for the last 8 years. I can honestly tell you, these tools can be fooled. I saw someone posted that they had a lot of false alarms. I can attest this is true, even on newly designed and released systems. I can also tell you, that my company no longer buys vehicles equipped with BSM.
This isn't saying people can't have or use these tools. Saying BSM is safer however, is, IMHO, a bit of a stretch. At the end of the day, the best tool in your arsenal, is above your shoulders.
I personally would not spend the money on such a system. But again, just my .02

I agree 100% here. I had my 14 FX4 for 3.5 years before I got my 4Runner, and it had the big display in the dash for the back up camera and warning system. I never realized how dependent I became on it until I got the 4Runner and caught myself multiple times looking at the dash when backing up. Never again, lesson learned.
Shame that... I find them to work perfectly day or night with just a glance.

Just curious, does your 4Runner have the high mirrors in the cargo area? I get that they're not perfect in poor visibility but will also say that between them and the big side mirrors Toyota hung on the 4Runner, I've never had much of an issue with vehicles in a blind spot.
Those cargo area mirrors are also brilliant btw for how you can see whether anyone's coming down the parking aisle before backing out. One the simplest yet smartest and most useful items I've ever had in a vehicle.

I agree, the cargo area mirrors are awesome. A little weird to get used to but now I use them all the time. I feel lost when I’m in any other vehicle that doesn’t have them.

audiovox makes a awesome radar based BSS. it is OEM grade, it will mount behind the rear bumper and have a indicator on each a pillar.

I've considered building my own from DIY kits integrated with a microcontroller or other programmable unit. I'm currently integrating a Raspberry Pi single board computer as a touch screen, and I supposed one could integrate a weather proof ultrasonic range finder lke this one, and connect it to the Pi (or perhaps a seperate unit to reduce wire runs.)
Project might cost somewhere around $100, depending on parts lying around and how many sensors one wanted to add. Range on them is a bit iffy out to about 15 feet. Not sure how much margin there is there for a quickly moving vehicle, or if doppler could be an issue (but that should be small, given two vehicles assumed to be going in the same direction)

I don't think lecturing certainty was anyone's intention. Personally, I stated my point of view, stated my experience with the topic of discussion, said I don't think its a necessary thing to have, and said I personally wouldn't pay for it. And multiple times said its my opinion. Not what I would call a lecture, personally. YMMV.
