i Am looking into Purchasing a combo car alarm/remote start. i know the big major manufacture is Directed. is their any advantages of buying a directed unit vs another companies unit? also crime stoppers makes a unit that has an fm transmitter is this any better then the transmitter used in the directed units?

i don't know a lot about car alarms and want to get something thats not junk. so if you can post your recommendations that would be great

ONLY if you can get one that does not cost alot.

Well I should I ask, are you doing the install or a shop?

If you are doing a self install, a PIECE of cake but if you are not electronically stable or not comfy doing or dont have patience, let a shop do it.

I buy everything for my car online.
Look for a good alarm online and see if a shop will install it.

compustar is way better, with the 2 way , there are like 2 models, one has 3000 ft of range and the other is 6000ft of range, and trust me they work, i start my car up with my 3000 ft of range, like 1-2 blocks away from the building at my work place to the parking lot.

Yes COMPUSTAR is great

But if he was thinking budget minded then uhh no..

The Python 990 and the Viper 5900 have a whopping 1mile range. I installed a python on a pathfinder and I was way down the street and it still cranked up.

It is up to you though.
All 3 great systems.

i will be doing the install my self i know enough about electronics and have done enough car audio installs that i feel very confident at installing it my self. price is not that big of an issue i would rater pay up a bit and get something better.

can you give me an idea on price of the compustar is it like 200 dollars more or is like 50 bucks more the the viper.

i don't want to get a cheep one thats not gonna work or wont let me hook up other stuff to it. at the end of the day i want to get something that is going to have awesome range and help deter theft.

also how hard is it to get the back window to work. i herd u can tap the aux into the switch or something?

As an installer I despise anything made by Audiovox... mainly Prestige line which is who makes the 996.

Programing them for different features is a pain in the balls and I have more warranty issues with them than Directed.

My shop sells mostly Viper stuff, but most Directed Electronics stuff is the same.

Crimestoppers is garbage but I don't have experience with compustar.

I've had my viper alarm / remote start for over 2 years now with absolutely no problems. Speaking from easiness of install and being able to easily program, then viper line is up there. I have a bitwriter which easily allows me to program pretty much any alarm, but when having to resort to the old school toggle or push button switch, directed stuff still is much easier.

i think i have decided to go with a directed brand alarm they seem to be the most recommended. now i just need to narrow down which brand viper/clifford/python and figure out how i can make the rear window work without having a bit writer.

When you say you want the rear window to work, do you want it to just go down as it does with the factory set-up, or do you want it to go up as well? Really shouldn't be too hard at all. I would probably just tie into the factory alarm wire to make the rear window roll down and use a 529T to make it roll up or 530T (window roll up module) to make it happen. Remember, if you simply tie into the switch it won't work as there isn't power there when the truck is shut off.

You really shouldn't need a bitwriter for your install either. However, even if you did want to get one for ease of the install, you can find them on ebay all the time for around $80.

i just want it to work like the factory setup i would have no issue just taping off the wire the factory system gives power 2 just would need to know were that wire was if any one could advise on that it would be great

Astrostart 2w

I have the AstroStart 2W on my 04' V8 Limited for about a year now.

It has the upgraded factory alarm, so a few notes for you.

1. Relay for the rear window to go up and down. It worked for a while, but not so much now. Think it came disconnected.

2. To bypass the startup, prevent the factory alarm from going off, and all kinds of quirky stuff: When starting using the new alarm, we (installer and I discussed options) worked it out so that the alarm would unlock the doors, start the engine, then relock the doors.

Otherwise, the two alarms came "unsync'd" on occasion and crazy things happened. In this config, it has NEVER failed to work as intended.

Just a heads-up that may save you some headaches.
