aftermarket amplifier with stock head unit?

I want to keep the factory head unit in my 4runner but am tired of its weak output. is it possible to splice in an external amplifier into the stock head unit? If so, how?

ya you can do that 2 ways either wire your amp and get an adapter for a (low pass) installation, or you can use JL audios clean sweep

I'm guessing since you have a 93 4runner you don't want to drop $300 on a JL Cleansweep. And you shouldn't. You can replace the radio and come out much cheaper.

You can add an amplifier to your 4runner without the need of any sort of LOC (line-output converter).

All you need is an amplifier with High-level inputs and you will be fine. Most new amps nowadays come with selectable high-low inputs. I suggest something like the Alpine MRPF250 or 450, or the JL Audio A4300. Both have the feature I was describing.

are high-level inputs the same as speaker-level inputs? if so, what makes this amp any different than any of the other jillion other speaker-level in put amps?

What makes these amps different from all the other jillion other amps is simply quality.

They actually produce the wattage they say they can produce, and they both deliver clean crisp power.

What the JL has that the Alpine doesn't is Rollback power... Basically most every amp on the market gets hot after playing for long periods of time. This can be pretty damaging to amps, and some are smart enough to cut themselfs off before overheating. Instead of cutting off, the JL amp cuts back its power output and allows itself to cool down then boosts back to full power. The lost power is not noticable at all...making the JL amp the smartest amp on the market.

Low output in a 03 with JBL

Hey there was reading your advice and was wondering the same thing. My radio almost went dead this morning and then after a short period I have sound and volume. Can I out in another amp into this system the sound quality is not good? thanks, CSM-H
