Aux rear lighting
On the same note... I'd like to know if anyone has wired bulbs into the red lenses on the bumper (what are intended to be rear fog lights for sister versions such as the Hilux Surf) I thought about installing auxillary brake light bulbs in there. Comments or suggestions, anyone?

Is the braking on the 4th gen 4runner bad??? From the look of things, the 4runner has excellent braking equipment:
1. Big vented discs all around
2. Four-piston front caliper (8 total for front) and two-piston rear caliper (4 total)
3. 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS system
4. Brake Assist
These are mighty equipment...you will be hard-press to get better equipment from aftermarket, even from Brembo. The only things you may improve upon is slotted disc brake.
If you want to improve braking distance, then try getting fatter tires...to increase contact patch (maybe 275 width, instead of stock 265). Bigger contact patches will shorten braking distance significantly.
From most road tests, the 4runner is near the top among SUVs for braking.
But, no, i don't know of any aftermarket stuff...sorry.

I don't know about the original poster's situation, but my '03 4Runner has a very spongy braking feel and takes 2 men and a boy to press on the pedal to make the thing stop. I'm going to have the dealer look at mine; it's 3 weeks old and I'd swear they need to bleed the brakes.

Putting the red lenses in the bumper to good use
Sounds easy enough... haven't looked yet, but is there an easy way to remove the assembly from the bumper, or did you do it the hard way? This is a very useful mod -- assume I could install as the intended rear fogs, but like the idea of having extra warning to the inattentive driver behind me. Have also been looking into a 5-10 pulse brake light flasher for the third brake light -- most bike shops sell them. Have you considered doing a writeup on your mod and sharing it?

I wired up both the stop/signal and tail light functions. Very simple. Two sockets from NAPA, 1 & 1/8th inch hole saw, some wire, tape, and crimp connectors, and a shot of hot melt glue to seal everying. All the wiring connections you need are available from the hitch wiring.
