Aftermarket cats for 2001 Cali

Hi - would anyone have a recommended brand of aftermarket catalytic converters for a 2001 Limited cali-spec 4Runner?

The P0420 code has been plaguing the truck recently, and the O2 simulator mod did not solve the problem. I tried a new Toyota rear O2 sensor as well, and also ruled out any exhaust leaks (as best I could). So, looks like I need to replace the cats, and am hoping to avoid paying $2500+ for a set from Toyota. I've read on the forum that some people have not had success with some brands of aftermarket cali cats resolving the P0420 issue, so wanted to ask if there's a brand that does work. Eastern?

Finding after market cats that last is a tough assignment. Of course, you can buy a lot of them and still come out cheaper than factory.

Have you tried using Cataclean? My wife's 2001 had thrown a code and dealer was going to charge her close to 3K for a new cat. NO WAY! I canceled the code and followed the Cataclean directions. No code for over 3K miles now. Passed inspection too. No pending codes.

I would try it, even if you have to use 2 treatments.

Haven't tried Cataclean, but certainly worth a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

It does appear that any aftermarket cat will not last as long as a factory one. But like you said, you can buy several aftermarket ones for the cost of one from Toyota. My main concern with the aftermarket ones is that they'll not work at all, even for a short time. Seems the '01 cali spec trucks are fussy. So am I about emptying my wallet needlessly.

Around here, most everyone goes with Magnaflow cats. It does depend on your local smog laws and what's allowed though.
