Aftermarket fog lights, factory switch?

Hey Guys,

09 Trail Edition. Just mounted a CBI bumper on it, and the factory fog lights would not work.

Fab shop thinks that a new switch might be needed, as the wiring for the aftermarket fog lights is larger than the factory wiring harness.

They presented me two options: install an aftermarket switch, or re-wire the factory wiring harness.

They are LED lights, not sure of the wattage since it was just a quick call Wednesday as everyone was heading out for the holiday.

Reading this thread it seems that the factory lights MAY be 55w:

If they are 55w or less, I can safely use the factory switch, correct?

I have two 10w Vision X LED's wired up to the factory fog light switch. I used to have them in my CBI bumper, but moved them to my headlight housings. I haven't had any issues. Unless you are wiring up a light bar to the switch you won't have any issues. If you are mounting your LED's in the bumper holes I highly doubt your lights draw anything more than 25w each.

9006 is rated at 55w, led/hid should have a lower draw anyway.

I am heading there tomorrow, and I will look at the wiring and the switches, as well as the draw from the LEDs.

I agree--the LEDs should draw much less, the shop might just be a little hesitant based upon the different sizes of the wiring.

I will post an update once I get back from there.

Which wires did you splice into to connect the leds to the fog harness

I made deutsch to 9006 connectors so that they are just plug and play. 2 wires on each "harness" I made.

Update:

Visited the shop yesterday--the factory wires/harness are pretty thin, but they are going to give it a shot. We figured that the LEDs are drawing 18w each (3 x 6), so we SHOULD be okay. We will see. Worth a shot before we mount an aftermarket switch.

More drama though...

The CBI bumper leaves the washer reservoir and pump exposed. Working a mod to move it completely. Not fun.

Also, put some new springs on the front to level the truck and account for the bumper. Now it sits front high, and we are adding spacers to the rear.

When it rains, it pours.

But, but once, cry once, and it will be done right by the time it leaves the shop.

[MENTION=43380]billpete[/MENTION] the simple bolt in solution for the washer fluid tank is to get the oem 2015 Tacoma washer fluid tank that bolts directly into our engine bay. I haven't done it yet because I've been cheap and I'm trying to figure out if an OEM Tacoma replacement would be cheaper. I think the 2014 Tacoma tank is the same, but I'm only sure of the 2015 because I had a good look at my buddy's 2015 Taco.

I've been running LED aftermarket lights off of my factory fog light switch for almost 2 years now, with no issues.

Yeah we were thinking that, but it is about 1" higher than the front--and VERY stiff.

What's the rate on your springs? My Fox coilovers have 600lb springs and I lost maybe 1/4in of height when I put my CBI bumper on. I've been too lazy to raise them over that small of a loss in height.

Used OME 884 coils as recommended by Wheelers.

Got the truck back today, and it is awesome.

Custom Reservoir (made from PVC--holds 3 quarts per my additional question)

New driving lights (wired to the existing harness per my original question)

I am pretty happy. Bumper is beefy as all get out. I put a CBI bumper on my Tacoma, and you cannot see it from the cab. This one is clearly visible from the cab--and larger/beefier.

Thought that I would give you feedback for the help you guys gave me.

Just out of curiosity, do you know if the 2015 taco washer bottle will for sure fit? I'm just about to install the demello bumper on my 09 4runner on Wednesday and looking at options for a relocate. I've heard mixed reviews of whether the taco washer will work, and the only ones saying it will haven't actually done it.
