I checked the Accel, Mallory and MSD websites and searched here but I'm not finding anything 4Runner specific on ignition coils. Has anybody upgraded their ignition coil to something better than stock?

I have seen people use the MSD ignition system but I believe it was a universal unit for a 4 cyl motor. However, just my opinion, but if you don't have a built up motor to go with it then you won't really benifit from having one. When I say built up I mean at least head, headers, cam, ect. An upgraded ignition on its own isn't going to do a whole lot for you.

I'm just one of those guys who likes to upgrade whenever I can to something just a little bit better if I'm swapping in a new part anyway. I don't plan on any major performance upgrades but don't mine paying a little extra coin for something a tad over stock performance.
I like the LC engineering site. I don't like these stupid ads that appear in my posts. I keep turning them off in the ad control but I see them anyway. Does anybody else see them?

I got a hold of LC Engineering and asked if I could use the Crane Pro coil on my stock 4Runner. They responded pretty quickly and the answer was just a short "you can use it but it would be better to have an upgraded coil wire" as the response. I would have liked a little more detail but the reply came fast and the good news is that I can use it as an upgrade. Now I'll have to source some better wires but they sell those too. Pricey however...
it's pretty simple.. just find an aftermarket coil with the same ohm resistance as the stock one and then cut off your stock plug and wire your new coil to fit the same leads. then buy a coil wire off a old v8 and use the end pice to het your yota coil wire to fit your new coil.. with the right coil you can regap slightly bigger and this will help a bit.. more or less just run smoother though.

Wouldn't it be easier to buy an upgraded coil wire designed for the 4Runner though? Or maybe they don't make them...

So I installed the Demon coil system in my Jeep XJ a couple years ago without modifying anything else. It was a night and day difference. Startup was instantaneous, idle was vibrant, and throttle response was immediate. So when I found Accel Super Coils had a product that fits my 4R I pulled the trigger....
The result? Negligible with misfires. I have Densocore Iridium 150,000 mile plugs (fresh). Nothing. So far.
Hoping that a little extra O2 after removing the charcoal filter helps with response. Not sure what to do about misfires.
Any suggestions?

I have the LCE Crane Fireball coil upgrade and the 8mm wires on my 93! It was relatively easy to install(if you can read a wiring diagram) and I definitely noticed a difference. Use good plugs....That sucker is hot!

Igniter/Coil on 85 22R Fail - HELP
Hi All,
I searched the forum for similar problems but haven't had any luck so I thought I would ask in this thread.
So I'm helping my neigbor with his 85 Pickup with a 22r (carburated). He was driving the other day and it just died, he also said it was running a little rough that morning. After checking for fuel I found there was no spark. So I found a coil/igniter (identical) at a junkyard that came off a running engine and installed it. I cranked the engine and it started for about 3 seconds and then died. I also put a new distributor cap on - but no luck. I also tried a coil/igniter off of a 22re. It ran but the timing was at 10 deg - so I swapped coils and that put it back to 0. Anyway it ran for about 15 minutes and then died with no more starts after that no matter what I did. So at this point I'm trying to figure out what would cause a coil/igniter to get fried or fail..... I don't want to keep throwing parts at it because the igniters are ridiculously expensive ($160 for the Junkyard one that was guaranteed to work)
Any ideas? I'm going to get a better volt meter today so I can check resistance etc.
