aftermarket nav units

I have read some older posts on here about various head units that have nav in them but i havent seen too much about the how people like them down the road. I am interested in the pioneer avic z1 and would like to find some info or pictures from those of you who currently have these units in your 4runners. I would be installing it in a 2007 limited with the standard audio since i planned on upgrading.

If you can recall can you tell me what the wire color codes are for the 4runner to tap into to hook up the unit?

Did you use a factory power wire or run a new one?

Where did you put the mic and gps antenna?

Are you generally happy with your choice of headunit?

you'll be fine wiring the nav unit directly to the factory plug...

the only wires you should have to find are speed sense and parking brake, and reverse light if you are adding backup camera as well.

speed sense is purple/red at the ECM, 2nd plug from bottom, pin 8. ECM is behind the glovebox. My source also says speed sense can be found at the radio plug, and still should be purple/red.

Parking brake is lt. green at the BECU, middle plug, pin 2. BECU is the 3 plugs on the right side of the fuse box.

GPS antenna generally goes up against the windsheld on the dash. Preferbly I like to put them on the outside of the car because then there is no obstruction. You wouldn't believe how many times I've put them on the dash and not worked, moved to the outisde of the car and got full strength. GPS antennas are said to be not as weatherproof as XM/Sirius antennas, but oh well. I'd much rather have my GPS free from obstruction than halfass work. This also depends a lot on the windshield ... I've never done GPS in a 4th gen so I'm not sure how well it would work on the dash. I did a 05 BMW 325i about a week ago with the antenna on the dash and I was lucky to get 1 satellite connection. Needless to say I moved it to the outside of the car.

Does anyone know if there are any issues with installing the Pioneer HU with the JBL SYNTHESIS 3-IN-1 STEREO W/6-DISC CHANGER? I am considering purchasing a 2007 Limited with this stereo and having an installer put in the Pioneer AVIC-N1. The dealer mentioned that due to the complexity of the wiring for the JBL Synthesis, the installation and dependable operation of aftermarket NAV is problematic. He recommended a portable above dash option.

You will need to have the JBL amp bypassed.
