Aftermarket Racks

Hey everyone,

I am looking to use the 4Runner on a trip with 4 adults. Interior room is quite a bit smaller than what I have used in the past. I can't use the hitch with a storage box because I will be hauling a trailer with motorcycles on it.

I started thinking about getting something for the roof nothing huge but something that can hold a decent amount of stuff without sucking too much away from mpg. Some of the new roof units look pretty streamline. Plus I wouldn't mind being able to use the roof for mountain bikes down the road.

Anyone have any good luck with a certain brand over another or a certain model, etc. I really would like it if I could incorporate all the OEM stuff if possible.

Pictures, models, specs or any sort would be greatly appreciated!

I have a yakima megawarrior, it works great for hauling stuff up on the roof and it only takes about 20 minutes to remove it when I don't want it up there.

I also have 2 rockymount pitchforks mounted to it for hauling my bikes, they are great too.

I really like that Yakima basket and I could definitely make use of something like that. How does that Basket connect to the factory racks, any pictures? Do you know how much it can hold?

The one for sale is in CA though, I am in WI so shipping would probably kill that sale.

However I am thinking something more along the lines that I could put leather suits, boots, etc. in that would stay out of the elements. Just to gain some interior room.

Any of you guys use anything like that?

I guess I could put one of those cargo bags in that unit, however those things look like a brick sitting on top of your car and I am sure they are not too great on the mpg!

This is how it mounts, although the mount shown is the lock mount. The only difference is that the top bar with the keyhole isn't there on non locking ones.

The 2 outer "tubes" shown are actually kind of wing nuts.

I think it is rated at 80 lbs.. I dunno I've only had two 30 lb bikes and a cooler full of drinks/ice up there so far. And yeah they make a cargo bag for it, didn't know you were looking for enclosed though. I lose about 1.5 mpg (only on the highway, city is about the same) keeping the rack on all the time.

Also I think shipping on mine was only like $40.

gaterose, do you remember where you found your rack for that price? I wouldn't mind an open box item.

I did a little local shopping yesterday, it seems that the stores by me only discount 10% off list Yakima racks. Plus none of the places had one in stock. I found ORD Racks direct online, they seem like the best bet so far. Free shipping, additional 10% off. Anyone know of any good places to find these for a deal.

After thinking about it more I am really swaying towards a basket setup, it seems more versatile vs one of those ski box style things. I like that I can add a shovel mount to it in the winter, usually I keep one in the back of the truck when I go up north. Plus I could get the tire mount and put my trailer tire up there if I want to. I will have to get a bag that goes in it though. Yakima has a far out pro model bag that is pretty slim but will keep stuff dry. All this is getting a little pricey but what can you do...

Hey gaterose, do you have the extension for yours? I was just wondering how much bigger that looks on top of the truck?

Anyone put lights on theirs? If so did you end up drilling through the roof?

No I don't have the extension, with the extension it would cover the sun roof and I think it looks a little awkward because with the extension it is longer than the factory bars. A few people on here have the extension if you search the forum.

I got mine from geartrade.com, ORS Racks is really good too though. I bought my RockyMounts from them. That 4th pic on the product page for the megawarrior is my 4runner :)

edit: Also I have backup lights on the roof and have some spot lights to put on the front behind the wind deflector when I get a chance. You have to drill through the bottom of the foot or run the wire up the molding.

The limited/sr5 works pretty much the same way. If you do this, make sure you silicone up the hole or it will leak

I was wondering if it would look awkward, that is exactly why I asked. I was thinking it may be nice for a longer trip but if it looks stupid, I think I would pass.

Roof baskets are cool, have more room, and look awesome. Only downside is there's a lot of drag when loaded with another 1'-2' of cargo. Ever thought about one of these hitch baskets? It allows you to pull a trailer and use the basket. I have an el cheap basket that I'm going to modify to do just that. Should be able to have a local steel shop cut a much heavier length of 2" square tubing. I can drill my own holes and mount in place of the existing main tube that is 1/8" tubing. Just another option I thought I'd mention.

I agree about the drag, which isn't ideal. However I do like the functionality, versatility and amount of stuff you can put up there. Plus it is up out of the elements coming off the road and a little more secure since it is on top of the truck vs grab and run level. I have never saw the hitch setup like that before. I don't mind those racks on their own. There may be nothing wrong with it, but personally I don't like the added possible failure points.
