It's really hard to compare those options. I've seen people buy older cars with less mileage that ended up being a nightmare after they bought it. I've gone through this personally.
I'm not sure it all really depends on maintenance and upkeep, but I bet a generous amount has something to do with it. I think some of it is pure dumb luck. Also, remember that parts wear out differently around different regions. There's a lot of factors with how long a vehicle last when it comes to the every day use/abuse of the vehicle, regardless of how well you keep up with the maintenance. It honestly COULD simply come down to the kind of fluids or brand parts used versus the other person. A lot of different variables to consider.
