Air Conditioning Help

I am having a problem with the Auto Climate Control on my 03 Sport. I have the temperature set at 66 degrees with the A/C light on, and it seems to intermitenly blow hot air out of the vents. It blows ice cold air when it is first turned on, but quickly cycles between blowing hot and cold air. This is not something that is new. I got the truck in Septmber of 2003, and when I was test driving it, I told the salesman that the air did not seem to be working correctly. He told me that it has to break in for the first 1,000 miles and it has not run in awhile. He also started to explain to me that it is an auotmatic climate control system and the car controls the air. Also, I have not had my truck in the heart of summer. These are 70-75 degree rainy days.

Today, I took my truck to the dealer for the 7,500 mile service. I told them about my air condition problem and they said they will test it. Well, they did, and surprise. It was blowing at an acceptible temperature. I then looked at the paper work and they tested the air in re-circulate mode. They told me that if I want the air cooler, I should push the re-circulate button. They did tell me that I should bring it back if I have more problems. I am very upset about this. I could kick myself for not looking into the problem when I test drove the truck. What could this be? Does anybody else have this problem? I have been in many Toyota's and they have had very strong A/C's.

I thought in Auto mode the system controlled whether the air recirculated or not. If that's correct, then they didn't test it properly.

I am typing what is written on the service order: Customer states A/C blows hot and cold. Correction: Normal operation. Leave on re-circulate.

Auto mode does control the re-circulate mode.

My '03 Limited does the same. It alternates between hot and cold, but not so drastically that it's constantly noticable. I usually leave it on 68.

I've had to control the recirculate manually. Wish that was tied to the outside temprature some how...

Dealers are morons. Why the hell would your AC have to break in before running correctly. All it has to do is run a compressor and a blower. It should never blow hot air. I'd take it to a different dealer.

IIRC, it is tied to the temperature difference between what temperature you have set and the actual temperature it is inside. If it's over some limit (10 degrees F, I think) it sets recirculating mode until the temperature comes within limits, then shuts recirc off.
