Air Filter question

How often do you all change out your air filter. I have 37,000 miles on my 4R and the guys tried to get me to buy a new one yesterday when I was getting my oil changed. Is this the right time to do it? Thanks!

On all of my vehicles, I change my air filter at every oil change (every 5000 miles, which I do myself).

I once saw on PBS's "Motorweek" about how important changing the air filter is. Some people worry so much about oil, etc., but don't think about the dirt actually getting inside the engine. Or how much the airflow is being restricted by a dirty filter.

Do you change your oil filter at every oil change? Clean, unrestricted air flow is just as important to your engines longevity as clean, unrestricted oil flow.

Regardless of what the manufacturers are saying nowadays with these extended service intervals, I wouldn't "cheap-out" on waiting too long to change your filter.

I change the air filter myself. I typically take the air filter out and examine it to determine if it is worthy of being changed.

:iagree: IMO, dino oil + air filter = better protection per dollar than synthetic oil and normal air filter changes.

Toyota recommends 30K mile interval. But it all depends on where you are driving, dusty gravel roads would require changing the filter more often, then driving in low dust areas. It is a little known fact that a dirty filter will keep your engine cleaner then a clean filter. The reason is that a dirty filter keeps more dirt from getting through. The down side of a dirty filter is poor performance and gas mileage. The important thing is to make sure you have a good quality filter OEM is great and when you change it make sure it is installed correctly (no areas where air will leak around it) a poorly installed filter that lets air get past the filter element without being filtered is what will harm your engine. I would not let a tech change my filter, if I did I would have to check his work and make sure he installed the filter correctly. JMHO
