Engine Air Filter Question

Question: Why is what appears to be an OEM Denso air filter, which I just replaced, about an inch shallower in depth than the new Wix filter...?

A few years back they lessened their standard spec for OEM replacements to be thinner, assuming to save costs on materials

^^^^ Thanks, I figured that might be a possibility. Of course, the next question is does it make any difference.

PSA, the Wix filter has a plastic webbing glued to the bottom of it. I messaged Tech Support and received this response, nice of them to help:

"The foam on the bottom is a great pleat stabilizer and in snowy wet climates works great to keep water away from the media and of course it will catch larger debris.
allowing the media to catch the finer debris. Please do not try to remove it."

you realize you can still get the original filter ---- its a lexus part #17801-38051

just toss that part # into google search ---- and you can order an OEM Lexus air filter for a gx that is the same as the old 4runner filter before they replaced it with the skinny one.

i ordered one about 6 months ago, my son got one last week for his 2016

Thank you. Too late now, though. I really don't know the functional difference/effectiveness between the two. Still, I'll look into getting this one in a year. Will check for a cost comparison. Appreciate it.

P.S. Various sources, including the Amazon filter, say it fits the Runner and also FJ Cruiser. Listed at just north of 30 bucks, various sites. Not too shabby.

17801-38051 also has the prefilter element. I would add air filters to orders when I needed to hit the $75 free shipping min. Now I have 5 or 6 for spares.

lmao I did the same thing. I haven't needed to buy a filter in 3 years. cabin filters too. Ive bought parts off ebay too that I needed donor pieces for. I have so many extra switches, bulbs, trim pieces, headrests lol, screws bolts

You can get the OEM filter pictured for under $20 online. Or you can go for a KNN replacement. Just bought a couple of OEM replacements. Forgot I had already replaced with KNN on my 2018 4Runner...
