Air Filter

It will probably be some time before a CAI comes out for the 5th gen (unless you make your own like BFLAN...which was awesome btw!). However, I was surfing around for a drop in filter (K&N) and discovered something. (I know everyone has a choice for drop ins, but I've had K&N for a long time and never had any probs).

If you go to Autozone or any website and just look for a stock replacement air filter for the 5th gen, it comes up with a FRAM CA9683. If you look at the vehicle applications, this filter will fit any FJ or 4Runner from 2005-2010. I went on K&N and just used the 2009 4Runner and it showed me the K&N 33-2281. I compared the dimensions of it to the FRAM, and they are exactly the same (about 14" long and 6.5" wide). So I am thinking that filter will fit my car.

So today, I'm going to go measure my filter and see if the dimensions are correct, and if so, then drop in filters of any brand for the 4th gen V6 should work on the 5th gen V6!

If I am missing something and/or crazy please let me know!

Beware. The K&N has cost me $35 and then $99 at the dealers to reset the check engine light and clean the mass air sensor. Oil from the filter gets on the sensor and sets it off. The first time a year and half ago they said some dirt got on the sensor. This last time they cautioned me about oil on the K&N. Well I had not oiled it for over 2 years. I just trashed it and put in a filter from NAPA. Never saw any improvement in gas mileage anyway. I consistently get 20 mpg 30% around town / 70% highway 55-70 mph.
Just my experience. YMMV.

Well nevermind, the filter is different. Those websites have it wrong. The filter is actually now a rectangle that is roughly 12.75" long and 9.25" wide after measuring it.

Interesting! I was going to get a K&N when they came out (as I had one in my old SUV and did see a difference) but have a feeling I might skip it with this one. The technology of these 4R's have increased so much in the last decade I doubt a simple air filter swap will make much of a difference anyway.

I have noticed a difference in my filter swap! Not anything crazy but definitely more throttle response! Usually the easiest way to get more power is to open these things up a little bit and allow them breathe easier, both intake and exhaust.
