Here you are, I need to do this, every time I start my truck it smells like dirt :bash:

Thanks. I am going to price the filters at the local Toyota dealer and put em in. I went to Jiffy Lube yesterday $56.00 for the oil change and yada yada. they wanted $49.00 for the cabin air filter. I said to the guy "you have got to be on crack"........he took it personal had to back track a bit.........=)

Looked similar to the OEM Toyota filter. Now sure what the Toyota filter goes for these days but IIRC the Fram was around $18.
I did not buy the Fram Cabin Filter because I make my own using the 3M Filters from Home Depot. I get at least four filters out of one 3M for about $16.

You can make your own out of furnace filters, cut to ~ 8 1/2" square. There are a few threads around here describing the process. You end up spending less $, and a better filter to boot. The OEM filter might slow birds down a bit, but not much else.
As far as the engine air filter, I had a K&N in her before I owned her a week.

Yes, I use the OEM Filter Frame.
NO Glue, just cut the filter so that it fits snuggly in the frame.

This Fram filter looks almost identical to the OEM Toyota Filter. My local Walmart sells them for $12.47 + tax.
The cost of the Fram and the 3M filter brings my cost for both to less than $18. Not bad compared to the $51 the dealer wants for both.

Appreciate the tips and advice. =) I have replaced the air cabin filter twice both times it looks like it needed it. I figured the major issue here is dust both road and glacial. After seeing the replacement from Toyota I am confident as you are that I can do better. Will pop into Sears and get some similar product for future use.

Well, I have to admit a reversal on my decision to cut my own cabin air filter from furnace filters.
Over the past weekend, I was out in some moderately nasty & cold weather with a home-cut filter in there, and the heating system did not perform to my expectations.
I thought maybe I had made some error in the filter, so the next day, I examined it.. No errors on cutting/installation, no obvious blockages, so I looked at the resistance of the filter material itself. Using admittedly crude testing methods (blowing thru it with a vacuum cleaner output & measuring how far it would lift a piece of paper), the furnace filter material was significantly more restrictive than the used OEM filter.
The furnace filter was 3M filtrete.
Picked an OEM filter up at the dealer ($22 bucks) and it works much better.

Thanks to all of you for posting the information on the cabin air filter. This past Saturday I noticed the dirty smell while doing some errands with the wife in her T4R (new to her - 48K used vehicle). When I got home, I pulled the cabin air filter and found that it was very nasty. I doubt that the filter had every been changed. I called walmart and four other autoparts stores, to no avail. Most of them said they could order the filter for around ~$30. I ended up buying the furnace filter and now I have eight (8) filters for $15. I plan to have the filter ordered or pick one up at the dealer when I get a chance, but for a quick fix, this will do for now!
