air filters??

what air filter is everyone using in there 4th gens and tell if your a V6 or a V8 also does anyone know what the best filter there is out there to run?? thanks

i use a fram-air right now that i put in not too long ago but befor that i used a ram hawg which is what i think it is called. im just lookin for the best and cheapest one and when i get my vortex installed i want an air filter that will give me more noise!! thanks!

I used to have a K&N filter. Both look identical and both have similar performances. Only differences is the sticker and price. TRD cost more than K&N. Also, I'd rather have a TRD sticker on top of my airbox vs K&N. lol So let me know if you wanna buy my K&N filter. Yours for $25 (shipped).

K&N in a 2008 V6. Cheaper than disposable filters, Should pay for itself within a year or so.

I just bought a afe pro dry filter for my v6! I don't have it yet, fedex is bringing tomorrow! We'll see how it works! I bought that one cuz I read that the oil on the k&n can mess up the maf sensor!

Just put in the Volant CAI, hopefully will be worth it. Sound is much louder.

K&N for factory box.

I use the K&N in the factory box. Very cost effective, but cleaning it and re-oiling it takes some time to do as recommended by the manufacturer.

I see there's a K&N sticker on the stock intake of the truck I just bought. Haven't gotten to that yet, but if it's an oiled filter, it and the sticker will be in my trash can when I get to it. Fram or OEM will replace it.

So how long 'till this is moved to an obscure sub-forum with a vague name that could include almost anything of interest? And why is that center console thread over in Performance, Tires, Wheels, Exhaust, Superchargers, AND MORE!? Did it qualify under "and more"? I kind of wondered what people were using that thing for, kinda handy for using my Blackberry for nav.

I recently replaced the stock filter with a FRAM but I also just received a TRD CAI but it's too darned cold right now to install it.

When I had my 3rd gen, I had an Amsoil drop-in oiled filter. It sounded a tad louder but did nothing else other than contaminate my MAF when I (chronically) over oiled the darn thing. I ended up going back to a Fram paper filter.

As far as more sound, you're better off sticking with the Fram or other throw-away drop-in BUT remove the 2nd (post-filter?) filter. I know there've been a few threads about this. It not only adds a little sound but seems to add a few RWHP via the butt dyno.

Reminds me of the time I visited my local independent repair shop.
They had a vehicle in for a CEL. The owner of the shop was hooking up his scanner to the car when I saw the K&N filter. I laughed and said I'll bet you that the CEL shows a MAF problem". Sure enough the owner of the vehicle over-oiled the filter and killed his MAF. A used MAF for the vehicle was $300 (new was almost double that). With the CEL the owner would not pass the state emissions inspection. This owner learned the hard way. So much for "saving" money with a K&N over paper filters. Sadly, this happens all to often where the savings vaporize because the owner does not follow the directions for using an oiled filter.

I use the Fram paper filters in my 4Runner. I do not put a lot of miles on my 4Runner in a year (~5K). For me, $12 for a Fram every year or two is not too much to pay especially since the sound my V8 makes is not all that important to me.

Personally, I take the oiled filter manufacturer's horsepower claims with more than a few grains of salt. In all the discussions regarding oiled filters I have seen so far, NOT ONE vehicle owner has EVER posted actual dyno slips before and after an oiled filter was installed.
