This is gonna sound stupid, but while removing the air inlet pipe in order to change the plugs (first time I've done it on this car), there is a chamber? on the bottom of the pipe that resembles a drain pipe under your sink. It was full of some nasty greasy water. Is this some sort of trap for moisture? Is it supposed to have a certain amount of fluid in it or should I clean it out and re-install dry?

reinstall it dry as far as i know there is no vapor/moisture collection that goes in there.... i'm not 100% sure but more like 95% sure that's not meant to be like that and i would be kind of concerned where all of that came from....
nothing in this pic thats highlighted should be filled with water.....
from the front of the car.
the first chamber is the airbox , your air filter goes in here
the next chamber is the intake silencer and is just a baffle really to quite the rushing air down
as far as i know none of this should have any sort of greasy water in it, i suggest you dry and clean the best you can as whatever is in there is getting sucked to your throttle body and down into your engine.....
i would also suggest cleaning your maf at this point as well and maybe the iac
the maf is an extra 2 minute job really if you have the sensor cleaner laying around
****makes sure all hose/tube clamps are snug and aligned properly to prevent more water getting in there******
and before you start freaking out how much water are we talking about, is it more of a residue or a pool? some residue is expected but if there is droplets and small pools i'd be concerned.

Thanks. I'm ashamed to admit this is the first time I've changed the plugs since buying the car 5 years ago! When it's running great I tend to get a little lax in my maintenance. I'm guessing it took 5 years for this moisture to build up and I'll be keeping a closer eye on it in the future.
