Air intake duct relocation

Does anyone have any clever suggestions or experience with this? Have custom made bumper and all the stock plastic junk up front has been eliminated. Very sexy! The intake is now exposed to mud shrapnel. I'm tired of changing my air filter every few weeks. It's getting mud in it easily.

I would do a piece of 90* PVC elbow out of the airbox/fender, then a length of PVC pipe pointed toward the door inside the fender. Maybe with another PVC 45* to 90* at the end to help guard against letting water in.

Another option possibly could through the cowl like some folks with the 4th gen and tacoma have done.

We had this dilemma with ours and ended up with a snorkel.
 
Unfortunately the physics of fluid dynamics make that not a good option.. those angles and changes in direction of air flow cause vortices and and pressure fluctuations. MAF signal would be all over the place.
 
That would work I just don't like the way they look and I rarely encounter water that deep around my parts. Also I want to keep the truck breathing as close to stock as possible. Thanks sir ✌️

Snorkels for water only is a misconception. Additionaly they are great for dust and keeping you air filter cleaner, esp with a precleaner. Without the precleaner installed, my snorkel breaths better than stock. With the precleaner, its only mildly restricted.

I just think they are ugly I want to keep my truck sleek and low profile. Also don't want to need an a/f tune. Like you mentioned your snorkel delivers more air to the engine thus the need for an a/f tune. Otherwise your just causing damage running too rich or lean. Some manufacturers make snorkels tuned specifically for your truck. Your talking serious money now. I'm looking for a free solution that won't affect my a/f.

If you're concerned with an a/f tune, any change to the intake including a cai, snorkel and any relocation would requrie one per you concerns. To this day, I still don't know anyone with or has even persued an a/f tune... they just simply enjoy the increased performance.
 
free solution.. turn it upside down for now.. least water and dust/dirt won't get in there as easily.. either turn it upside down or turn the opening towards the rear of the vehicle.

I think turning the cup opening towards the rear will work best

That's what I'm also thinking for now until I get a diy tuner. Turning towards the back. It's actually pointed at that upwards angle for a reason. Bernoulli's principle. Thanks for y'all's response kind gentlemen!

I think you're overthinking it a little. It wouldn't be much different than how the air travels in a snorkel, which has very little to no affect on how these 4runners perform. It would be a much shorter run anyway. By the time the air moves through the air filter and charcoal filter, any turbulence is going to be smoothed out. I mean, it's an anemic 1GR with piss poor factory tuning anyway. Some custom tuning would probably help out all around.

That's not the way it works. The throttle body controls the intake of air into the engine, not the snorkel or lack thereof. Just because it may potentially breath with less restriction doesn't mean it has air being forced in like a turbo.

Thanks for the information. The throttle body interacts with air but has no idea what it is.. it receives several electric signals in the form of voltages and resistances from multiple sensors. The MAF interprets the physical properties of the air. Volume, temperature, density.. then the throttle body operates accordingly. The brains are engineered specifically for the way the truck was factory built with set parameters. These are strict parameters and slight variations in the signal make big differences.

whoa whoa.. im grateful for cat converters... we'd all suffocate on the roads without them... fumes from burning gasoline is toxic as F

You wont need to tune anything because the MAF has fairly loose tolerances to accommodate most air, humidity, altitudes etc etc.. if youre not throwing a check engine light you're most likely fine..

oh adn as for the TRD accelerator.. dont expect gains of any sort other than noise.. i just messed around w/ it because it was a cheap experiement
 
There is a front facing flat funnel like air intake for, subaru's?
Sits on top of the radiator.
Seems like a couple guys have done it.
 
I'm not sure the MAF would be significantly affected by the snorkel to be honest with you?

Throttle body/engine volumetric efficiency determines how much air the engine can physically suck into itself. The MAF will calculate how much air is going through the intake tube itself post air filter. As long as the air coming into the actual air filter box is roughly similar to what factory expectations are (which I don't entirely see being an issue with a properly designed snorkel) then the MAF should be reading within it's expected ranges. While turbulence and air velocity might be affected pre-filter, it should smooth out going through the filter and the actual intake air tube where the MAF is installed because those are controlled spaces.

If it isn't reading correctly then you'll set a DTC for some MAF performance issue as the vehicle will try to correlate the MAF signal (input) with it's expected load/work and monitor it's AFR and O2 readings (output) to make sure it is working within it's desired fuel ratios and efficiency parameters.

I don't think I've heard of anyone in the 4th or 5th gen forums needing to "tune" their ECM for a snorkel install unless they were going forced induction? But I haven't been around as much as I used to be so I guess I could have missed that?
