Air suspension question...

My new 2008 4Runner has the adjustable rear suspension, but when I read about it in the manual it doesn't seem to mention any related automatic load leveling function when towing. I was always under the impression that it could do this. The manual seems to talk as if the air suspension can only be raised or lowered while doing low speed and that once 30 km/h is reached it will automatically go back to normal height.

? If it is in the manual somewhere I must be missing it...

My factory air level does auto level and once level, it keeps that level as the "Normal" height regardless of speed. If you force low or high level, there are speed limits for these settings.

AFAIK, it has this function. When you add load to it, it adds to the pressure so it will keep the same height.

But you cannot lower it to fit it better with what you are towing, that's just an abuse of the airbags.

Not that I'm aware of.
But I'm 99% sure that this is how the air suspension system works in a 4runner.
Why? Because EVERY vehicle I know that has this kind of an automatic load steering.
And it's not a very complicated device...
I think you can easily try this by getting few people to stand on your rear bumper, you should be able to hear the air compressor add air to the bags...
But of course, I'm not an owner of a 4runner with this kind of system (I don't like airbags, they rip apart when it's freezing and driving in hars conditions).

The system was designed for towing and carrying loads. It does in-fact work very well when towing. No matter what the tongue weight (within recommendations) the system automatically levels the vehicle, on the fly. This system is one of the best on the market. It even has an air dryer to remove moisture in the system. You can raise the system for off roading, water crossings, and going over driveways. You can lower the system to load and wash the vehicle. When backing up over a steep driveway you can lower the rear so the rear of the trailer rises, to clear. Then after the rear of the trailer passes you can raise the rear so the hitch clears. It works very well!
