Airaid Jr Intake Kit

Glad you like it! I love mine. The sound doesn't bother me either. I only notice it when I am getting onto the highway. I do 90% of my driving on the highway and I noticed a considerable difference when I need to pass or merge. Like you said its mostly throttle response. I think you will see some gains in mpg, I certainly have.
I have always been loyal to K&N, but I have to tell you if I knew it needed the adapter piece to fit in properly I would have just ordered the Airaid filter instead. But for now I am extremely happy with all my set ups.
As for install, I took about the same time as well. I always take extra time. I also had a hell of a time getting mine on at first, I ended up loosening the airbox to get it all together.
Let me know if you do calculate the mpg. I never have, I just go by the needle. I used to barely make it through a work week on gas. Now I can go all week and into the weekend.

Cool, yeah I would be very pleased to just get ONE extra MPG.
Hell that would pay for the intake kit on just this one trip we are planning in the next couple of weeks.

Yeah that old K&N the previous owner had in there, I dunno what he did to it but cant imagine beating an air filter up as much as that.
And the fact that the new Airraid filter is at least twice as thick makes me feel better because I now it has more than double the surface area so even if the new filter is just as good as the K&N it still has more surface area so it has to breathe better and I can tell it certainly does because of the much improved throttle response.
I am going to try to run at least one tank of gas through it before going on this 2-3 week trip.

I have gotten right between 12.8-13.1 MPG around town for the past 2 years so if I get better than that I will know.
On highway I do not recall getting any better than 18.8 mpg
After this trip I will know right down to the ounce what mileage I get after doing 7000-8000 miles in a few weeks.

I am going to take it in early next week to have it completely gone over, check everything.
I know I need rear brakes so will do those, replace with all Toyota OEM brake shoes and replace the drums IF they need to be.
Other than that not sure I need anything other than rotate tires and grease every zerk fitting.

Rear brakes are something I need done as well. I will be taking a 4500 mile trip in June (AZ to FL and back) and then what I call a more major trip from Phoenix to Seattle to move there for good in August. I call it more major because I will be pulling a U-Haul trailer.

These will mark my 9th and 10th trips across the country. My quick tips would be to give the engine and tires a check over at every stop for fuel and/or rest. It only takes a few minutes, but could save a big hassle. I ignored a strange sound one time thinking it would be "ok" and I ended up on a flat bed 100 miles later (this was in my old car, not the 4Runner).

Anyway, I'm glad I could help with the intake and have a safe journey. And keep my posted I'm invested now haha.

I know this is an old thread but i thought i would add to it. I just got the jr kit with dry filter. I am over all happy with it, install was fast and simple. However the vacuum line down to the power steering pump fit too loose on the fitting on the intake so a hose clamp was needed. I did not like the adaptor for the large vacuum line so i replaced it with a new piece of trans line that fit in the metal line and intake tube. Mpg seems to gave go e up a little but the jury is still out on that one. No major gains in power that i can feel but i will watch the hp meter on my scan gauge. Throttle responce is a little better and acceleration is definitely smoother so the engine is breathing better. I did pulk the efi fuse for 5 minutes after the install to reset the ecu.

I noticed zero gains, just a little more noise in the intake really. I'm sure combined with a fresh air filter and exhaust you might notice something, but I wouldn't expect too much.

Well after this thread I did go on a 7700 mile cross country trip.
Prior to that trip and before the Airaid and Muffler I had never seen above 18.8mpg on highway and that was cargo area totally empty, hauling nothing but two people.

On the trip my "average" mileage for the entire 7700 miles was 19.83mpg.
On a couple tanks I got over 21mpg. and that was hauling about 800# of crap in the cargo, plus two people and a Chihuahua.
this is still hardly conclusive since the 18.8 was in this area and mileage seems to differ considerably in different areas of the country.
For instance the only place I got over 21mpg on the whole trip was just a part of Oregon.
In Southern California I was lucky to see over 16-17mpg but there was a lot of stop and go there.
I think temperature, humidity, and how hilly the area is is really the main thing that determines how good or bad you mileage is going to be.

But I have about 2 years with this on my truck now.
I can say that I am at best getting a very small increase like less than 1mpg in CITY driving. As in maybe about a .2 to .4 gain which is really so minimal that honestly that could be anything.
However I do believe that I am getting around 1.5 - 2mpg better HIGHWAY mileage but also keep in mind that this was with the added benefit of a much freer flowing Muffler than stock.

I ended up with a Borla 40665 Turbo XL, this combined with the Airraid Jr kit gave me about a 2mpg gain.
I think if you have more air coming IN it will not do as much good unless you can get more air going OUT.
Once you do then one thing without any question is between the two the truck just plain runs better, sounds better, definitely much better throttle response.
Maybe a very tiny boost in get up and go.
and as far as I can tell a decent little jump in just highway mpg but not city.

Overall I was pleased with it and would buy again.

I plan on getting a Borla muffler installed soon as well. I think I will hold off on the Airraid for now then, I've already done the deckplate mod so getting a little more air than stock.

I've put these on 2 of my rigs. Not for any gains but due to the fact that my OEM intakes were tearing apart at the accordion due to dry rot and age. They were cheaper then the oem units.
