No actually. It would be nice if the TSA kept their hands off of everybody AND didn't require exposure to x-rays as an alternative to crotch groping (I have yet to experience either at Newark Liberty). I performed personnel searches in combat zones where suicide bombers were a very real and far more likely threat. None of those searches required grabbing crotches or any other unreasonable touching. Now, if the women of TSA were ranked on a scale of 1-10 and only 6s or higher were allowed to search men, then yes, it would be nice. :cheers:

I have to fly on business quite a bit so if I gotta do this..whatever. The only thing I hate is the beeyotchs that work around our DC airports are those loudmouth and crass kind of women that bring attention to everyone & everything. They're not discreet about anything. At the smaller airports, they're usually discreet and generally decent if they have to pull you aside for further inspection. However, around here, they have no manners or couth.:nono:

i recently went through the Michigan airport and sorry...but this is a joke. MSN just had an article on has TSA actually caught anyone. and the answer is basically.....no. they dont need to see our junk. i say go back to profiling.

Yeah, skin dose is the main concern. Medical x-rays require aluminum filters and standard distances from skin to x-ray source specifically for skin dose reduction. I like how the TSA can implement a machine that throws all that knowledge and practice out the window. And zero exposure is the only amount of x-ray exposure that is safe; any other amount, no matter how small, carries some risk.

I understand that there may be rare rare risk for frequent travelers...and i mean, FREQUENT. But for 99% of us, these pose no threat.

Yeah, i don't think that TSA folks exactly enjoy grabbing our crotches either...you guys make it seem like TSA folks are out to molest every single person. Come on. TSA folks are just like you and me (and probably had much more background check than most of us)...so, unless you guys like to molest children and old folks, lets keep our biases in check. :rant:
My opinion is that...whatever it takes to keep me safe in the air is OK with me. I have nothing to hide. I just want to be able to see my family at the end of the day. If the damn liberal folks don't like profiling, then suck it up with this.

In response to the boisterous backlash, Amitai Etzioni, a George Washington University professor and author, has penned an essay in defense of the technology. In a New Republic contribution Etzioni argues that the actual threat by these scanners "has been inflated using sensationalistic imagery" and notes that new scanner software "replaces the realistic images of the passengers who are being scanned with a cartoon of a generic, clothed body."
Here's the professor's rationale:
"As you can see, the images of passengers that actually appear on TSA screens are a far cry from the one circulated by civil liberties advocates, because the scanners are equipped with two kinds of privacy filters. One conceals the genitals and the other the face. (What's more, new scanner software replaces the realistic images of the passengers who are being scanned with a cartoon of a generic, clothed body, and marks areas that should be checked further. This software is currently being tested.) Further preserving privacy, TSA staffers who view the images are in a separate room and are unaware of the identity of the passenger who is screened."

Come on...you actually think that ALL those TSA would participate in group pedophilia in front of the whole airport??!! Common sense people!
It may be that the scanner showed something suspicious...otherwise, you have a choice b/w scanner or patdown. Now, if the scanner shows something out of the ordinary, then you also get the patdown. Remember, terrorists will use anyone to carry out their deeds...including pregnant woman or child.

Not sources of x radiation. Radiation in general, yes, but not the ionizing type.
I'm sure they don't enjoy it. But no one said they did. The point is that the policies in place are bordering on extreme and are absolutely unneccessary for security purposes. Again, neither of the issues discussed here are in place at Newark Liberty which is 1 of 3 main airports for the New York Metro area.

Are you so sure that it is "absolutely unnecessary"?? I am sure that there are multiple security experts weighing in on this for TSA. I am sure that no one from TSA enjoys these extra precautions...but we live in a world that certain extremists want to literally blow up.
Ok 2 out of 3 airports use these things...not sure what your point is?

Ok, let's analyze the video and poster's comment "Before the video started the boy went through a metal detector and didn't set it off but was selected for a pat down." He didn't set it off, a five year old was randomly selected. I didn't see a b/w scanner, but if something had shown up on one, why didn't they just check that location and not check his junk. America is simply starting to not resemble the land of the free anymore. I understand safety but how much more are we really safe when we are patting down a 5 year old boy. Body scans should be enough and I think what we have in place is good enough to make me feel secure.
I guess blood,urine and semen samples will be required next.

As I understand it you either have to take the body scan or the pat down. If you set off the body scan then I think you get patted down also.
So it is possible to not have to get the pat down.
